When listening to a podcast for the first time, I start at the beginning. They do often get better over time as the podcaster gains experience. This podcaster gets positive points for clearly stating that she isn’t an expert, that she is learning along with the audience. I definitely allow a lot of slack for pronunciation, scientific terms are often difficult to pronounce or have >1 accepted pronunciation.

But, while listening to episode #2, I turned it off after the 5th time the podcaster said ... more

  • Frustrating

    This podcasts interviews

lots of great experts with a deep knowledge but always frustrates me because the technical stuff is never really addressed in any depth. With some genetic knowledge I repeatedly find it a missed opportunity, as the questions I want to ask are omitted. If it has a huge lay audience that’s fine, but not for me.

Q: Why is genetic testing for hereditary breast cancer so important for Italy's public health system?
Genetic testing can lead to early prevention and better monitoring, guiding proactive measures such as screening at younger ages.
#364 Breast Cancer Genetic Testing in Italy: A Curated Gene Panel
Q: How much of cancer is caused by lifestyle and environmental factors versus hereditary cancer?
Cancer is primarily genetic, with many mutations arising in tumor cells due to environmental factors, but hereditary origins are significant, especially for younger patients.
#362 Optical Genome Mapping: Detecting Structural Variants Missed by Traditional Tests
Q: Is optical genome mapping going to replace karyotypes?
In many circumstances, yes, it does replace karyotyping due to its higher resolution and capability to detect variations that karyotyping cannot.
#362 Optical Genome Mapping: Detecting Structural Variants Missed by Traditional Tests
Q: Can you give us an overview of what optical genome mapping is and how it works?
Optical genome mapping is a next-generation cytogenomic technique that offers comprehensive structural variation profiling of a genome. It works by isolating high molecular weight DNA and labeling it at specific motifs, then using imaging to capture and create a digital barcode for genome assembly.
#359 Breaking Down Achondroplasia: A Pediatrician in Clinical Genetics Explains
Q: What are some of those delays in developmental milestones for babies with achondroplasia?
Children with achondroplasia have larger heads, shorter arms, and shorter legs, which affects their crawling and physical milestones.
