  • Good topics

All the topics are so interesting and I like that the episodes aren’t dragged too long. I learn a lot from the content!

as a foreign listener the only thing that makes it hard to listen to more than one episode in a row is that she says “right” a looot. I can’t not hear it anymore, which is probably more my problem than hers.

  • Finally a “human” dog podcast

    Dear Rachel,

I found your podcast just yesterday and I’ve been binge listening to it. Finally a dog podcast also meant for us humans.

Your episodes make me feel less embarrassed and “guilty” for the training mistakes I’ve made in the past for example the episode about yelling at our dogs.

I actually listen to the podcast using Spotify, I just opened Apple to write this review.

  • Great podcast for guardians of “difficult” dogs

I’ve just recently started listening but this is quickly becoming my favorite dog training podcast. I like that Rachel’s advice is practical for being out in the real world. I also appreciate how candid she is about her own dogs.

  • Quality information from a fabulous trainer

I am a positive reinforcement trainer (who has had the pleasure of getting to know Rachel as I also live nearby in Colorado), and her podcast is top notch. It’s full of practical advice for owners without talking down to you. Rachel is an amazing trainer and person and I highly recommend this podcast to anyone with dogs!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

360. Training Hacks w/ Juliana DeWillem KPA CTP, CDBC
Q: How do you approach managing a young dog or a dog new to a household?
Start with strong environmental controls and gradual exposure, letting management provide a foundation while you train compatible behaviors and reduce training time.
360. Training Hacks w/ Juliana DeWillem KPA CTP, CDBC
Q: What exactly is management in dog training, and why is it so central to your approach?
Management is about shaping the dog's environment to influence behavior before it happens, using barriers and strategies to prevent unwanted rehearsals and support desired habits.
360. Training Hacks w/ Juliana DeWillem KPA CTP, CDBC
Q: First and foremost, was this a book that had been marinating in your brain for a long time, and did it finally come to fruition?
Not really; the idea came first and quickly shifted to focusing on management because it felt underrepresented, and the concept evolved as I realized how impactful environmental control can be.
298. Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why does the dog respond so much differently for different people?
It usually depends on each owner's training history and familiarity with the dog, as one owner may have a stronger reinforcement history with the dog.
298. Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why does my dog not respond when I know that they know what I am asking them?
The dog may not be as proficient in the behavior as you think, or they weren't adequately prepared for the distraction.
