Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

2026 May | 9 Day Sutta Retreat (4/26)| Ajahn Brahmali
Q: Dear Ajahn Brahmali, can someone with a personality disorder, such as narcissistic personality disorder, experience deep meditation, Jhanas and beyond in this lifetime?
The teaching suggests that many mental conditions are not permanent and can change through conditioning and practice; achieving deep meditative states may be possible once the mind is sufficiently stabilized, with the caveat that severe disorders might require time and transformation before fully engaging in advanced states. The path involves moving away from self-centeredness as jhāna deepens, and progress is possible after emergence from the disorder, with emphasis on gradual development rather than a fixed state.
2026 May | 9 Day Sutta Retreat (10/26)| Ajahn Brahmali
Q: What is the difference between thinking and contemplation during meditation?
Thinking is often random and not directed, while contemplation involves deliberately directing the mind toward a chosen topic and using it to deepen understanding, often ending with the application of vipassana insights after gaining some peaceful samadhi.
2026 May | 9 Day Sutta Retreat (13/26)| Ajahn Brahmali
Q: What is the difference between cultivating Samatha and Vipassana?
Samatha calms the mind while Vipassana cultivates clear insight; in practice they merge, because reducing defilements through mindfulness leads to both calm and understanding. The Buddha describes mindfulness of breathing as a path that integrates both qualities rather than strictly separating them.
2026 May | 9 Day Sutta Retreat (7/26)| Ajahn Brahmali
Q: Dear Ajahn, how should we celebrate Vaisak Day?
There are many levels of practice; some people prefer large ritual celebrations, others focus on retreat and meditation. The point is to offer meaningful opportunities for practice that resonate with different people and gradually lead them toward deeper engagement with the Dhamma.
The Vipallasas | Ajahn Brahm | 10 January 2001
Q: In which way do you describe perception in Jhānas as pure perception?
Pure perception in Jhānas comes from being purified of the five hindrances, so sensory distortions no longer colour perception, allowing clearer, uncontaminated insight.
