I love this host. Thinks deeply, humble, kind, generous. In one of the episodes he says he’s he’s like a lesbian from the 90’s. As a lesbian from the 90’s, I agree.

  • 4 stars

I do really like this podcast and learning about new books, but there are a couple of issues with editing (sometimes the host stops talking and restarts something when he gets it wrong, rather than this being edited out) and also some carelessness with mistakes (spelling the name wrong of authors and places in episode descriptions) that makes it feel a bit amateur? There have also been times where part of an episode has gotten really corrupted and unlistenable with two voices talking at once. Wi... more

The Fountain by Casey Scieszka: The Ever-Evolving Journey to Writing a Book
Q: So you're writing The Fountain this entire time?
Casey explains that her writing focus shifted over the years, with non-fiction work and later a pivot to fiction, ultimately culminating in The Fountain after a period of reassessment and growth as a writer.
Debuti-Vault: Brandon Taylor Discusses Real Life (2020)
Q: As someone who tweets a lot, you're also writing a lot. What is your balance like of when it's time to write versus when it's time to have fun on the internet or elsewhere?
I write in focused bursts, allowing myself to be online as a space of permission rather than distraction, and I try not to let social media derail the drafting process; I keep a balance to maintain clarity of voice and momentum.
Debuti-Vault: Brandon Taylor Discusses Real Life (2020)
Q: How did you switch from biochemistry to being in one of the best writing workshops in America?
I moved to Iowa for the writers' workshop after completing significant scientific work, which allowed me to dedicate myself to craft and revision, balancing rigor from science with literary exploration.
Debuti-Vault: Brandon Taylor Discusses Real Life (2020)
Q: And before I dive into the book, I'm not going to ask how autobiographical this is, but you also have a background in science, right?
Yes, I studied chemistry and nearly pursued a PhD in biochemistry before I left academia for writing, which influenced how I thought about characters, scenes, and the precision of detail in Real Life.
Debuti-Vault: Brandon Taylor Discusses Real Life (2020)
Q: So Real Life comes out in February, as you said, and to me it is a campus novel about Wallace, who is Black and gay and from the South, and he's moved to the Midwest to pursue a graduate degree in biochemistry—can you tell listeners what the book is about from your perspective?
The book follows Wallace as he navigates a shift from the South to the Midwest, grappling with his identity, ambition, and the consequences of a broken experiment that unsettles his life during a pivotal summer.
