I love this host. Thinks deeply, humble, kind, generous. In one of the episodes he says he’s he’s like a lesbian from the 90’s. As a lesbian from the 90’s, I agree.

I do really like this podcast and learning about new books, but there are a couple of issues with editing (sometimes the host stops talking and restarts something when he gets it wrong, rather than this being edited out) and also some carelessness with mistakes (spelling the name wrong of authors and places in episode descriptions) that makes it feel a bit amateur? There have also been times where part of an episode has gotten really corrupted and unlistenable with two voices talking at once. Wi... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

No God But Use by Bobuq Sayed - Finding the Viewpoints
Q: How did publishing dynamics influence your approach to the book?
Sayed notes the need to balance honesty and integrity with publishing realities, including choosing editors and agents who share values and recognizing the financial and institutional constraints of getting a controversial work to market.
No God But Use by Bobuq Sayed - Finding the Viewpoints
Q: What was the editing process like with Maria and Ezra?
Maria provided light edits focusing on character count and pacing, while Ezra engaged in deeper, hands-on edits that helped shape the manuscript toward a more final form suitable for a major publisher.
No God But Use by Bobuq Sayed - Finding the Viewpoints
Q: When did the two viewpoints come together in the novel?
The realization that a second narrator could disrupt a single authoritative voice emerged midway through developing Delbar and Mansoor, leading to a structure that continually challenges the reader and expands the story's scope.
No God But Use by Bobuq Sayed - Finding the Viewpoints
Q: What got you into fiction and writing first?
Sayed describes childhood immersion in libraries and a sense of belonging in books, which gradually evolved into a commitment to contribute to queer of color narratives and to push against singular national or authorial perspectives.
One Leg on Earth by 'Pemi Aguda - Enjoying the Hard Parts of Creativity
Q: How did your point of view change during the revision, and what did you learn about narrating from a more distant perspective?
I moved from a first-person, whiny inner voice to a more remote third-person perspective to let readers see around the protagonist, which helped loosen the claustrophobic feel and allowed for a broader narrative scope.
