  • Love it.

My absolute favourite nature based podcast, love the banter and not so formal structure of it, some other birding podcasts can be a bit stiff and dry, this one cracks me up though. Who cares that it's not always 100% about birds, there are plenty of other "just bird" podcasts out there if you can't handle it, most of us are interested in more than just birds anyway, and I get to constantly learn about other things as well. Keep it going César.

  • Captivating. Hilarious. Educational.

I'm not a birder but have been interested in getting into it for years. I call it bird perving. Can we get that going in the vernacular?

The ‘massacre’ carried out by Major Mitchell and his party of explorers was in retaliation to a large so called ‘war party’ of around 150 armed Aboriginal men following them for a number of days.

Mitchell’s men ambushed the aborigines at a place now called Mt Dispersion and killed at least 7 of them.

Mitchell called it ‘self defence’ but his critics have argued that he shou... more

38 - Bird of the Year with Ellen Rykers
Q: What do you think will win Bird of the Year 2025?
It's hard to predict, but I would likely vote for the Takahe given it celebrates the 20th anniversary, and perhaps the Matukuhurepo, the Australasian Bittern, as it is critically endangered.
38 - Bird of the Year with Ellen Rykers
Q: Do you think New Zealanders are proud of their wildlife and their birds?
Yes, New Zealanders take pride in their unique endemic birds, and many feel a strong connection, as evidenced by the fact that they call themselves Kiwis after the bird.
38 - Bird of the Year with Ellen Rykers
Q: What sort of voting numbers did Bird of the Year reach during the John Oliver campaign?

38 - Bird of the Year with Ellen Rykers
Q: What was the process like with running the book on Bird of the Year? Is it something you've always wanted to do or did it land in your lap? How did that work?
The book came about after the Bird of the Century event and interest from Penguin Random House. It was a daunting task as Bird of the Year has a significant cultural weight and expected several years of tradition.

Q: What does it mean to you to be a birder?
Being a birder means collecting experiences and knowledge about birds, which allows me to travel to new places and discover cultures.
