E56: Steve Schnarr - MR340 Race Director
Q: What makes the MR340 community so special and resilient Year after year?
The community thrives on shared purpose—people from small towns, volunteers, and racers come together with a deep love for the river. They support each other, share knowledge openly, and honor the last finisher as much as the winner, creating a unique culture of generosity and mutual respect.
E56: Steve Schnarr - MR340 Race Director
Q: Can you tell us how Missouri River Relief first became involved with the MR340 and how that relationship evolved?
We started by providing safety boats and volunteer crews because our mission aligned with supporting the race and protecting the river and its people. Over time, we took over the race in 2021, transforming it into a fundraiser for our organization while keeping Scott and Kate involved as part of the community.
E55 - David Horkan - 2026 Vohondu Marathon 3rd Place K1
Q: What does the Irish paddling community look like today?
He describes a diverse scene with whitewater, marathon racing, surfskis, canoe polo, and strong international connections.
E55 - David Horkan - 2026 Vohondu Marathon 3rd Place K1
Q: What motivated you to get into ultramarathon paddling?
David explains that a formative race (Devises to Westminster) and its hardships inspired him to pursue longer, more challenging endeavors and to pursue a lifestyle shift, including giving up alcohol.
E53: Matt Taylor & Bobby Johnson Talk Suwannee 230 & AL650
Q: What was the toughest setback and how did you recover?
A damaged boat early in the race required on-the-fly repairs with duct tape, followed by a psychological reset and renewed teamwork, which brought them back into contention and strengthened their bond.
