  • beautiful radio at its best

A truly engaging, at times quirky, always intelligent yet accessible gate to broadening one’s horizon in culture and arts. Must surely be one of the best quality shows on Irish Radio and easily takes the crown in the field of the arts.

  • RTE's Culture File

Anyone interested in the arts, should subscribe to RTE's Culture File. It's a fantastic podcast that's not too hung up on all the mainstream cinema releases and book launches. While most other arts shows are interchangeable, this one has a character of it's own. The presenter (who's amazing by the way) uncovers all sorts of unusual events and happenings on the Irish arts scene. And yet, there's always an international angle so really anyone from anywhere can enjoy it. Thanks for this iTunes.... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Shape of Jazz to Come: with Olesya Zdorovetska
Q: What personal or political dimensions are tied to the music in this conversation?
Freedom in improvisation is tied to resilience and self-definition across cultural contexts, including wartime Ukraine and European jazz scenes, emphasizing art as a form of existential defense and expression.
The Shape of Jazz to Come: with Olesya Zdorovetska
Q: How does improvisation function, philosophically, according to the discussion?
Improv is described as a conversation and a collective intelligence without hierarchy, not chaos, where memory, language, and habit still shape spontaneous creation.
The Shape of Jazz to Come: with Olesya Zdorovetska
Q: What makes The Shape of Jazz To Come so radical for its time?
It challenged long-standing harmonic maps and introduced the idea that melody, harmony, and rhythm could exist on equal terms, allowing multiple directions rather than a single tonal center.
The Music of Docteur Nico with David Beal
Q: And what did this particular press tour teach you?
It revealed that Americans are buoyant and optimistic in many ways, even when ignoring certain issues at home, which contrasts with how the press and public respond to global conversations about culture and politics. The broader point is that travel can illuminate how audiences engage with and absorb distant musical histories, while also highlighting the ways in which culture travels and influences identity.
Abbas Zahedi's Fast Moving Air, Post-Appalachian, Inishturk
Q: What is the particular quality of sound that makes it a good medium for work in that area?
He argues sound is a tangible, body-centered medium that activates the whole body when spatialized, not just heard through ears, which informs how he installs and experiences installations in galleries.
