  • No. Don’t make things up. That’s not correct

Nothing worse than a medical podcast with someone pretending to be an expert in something they truly don’t know or have zero experience in. The in flight emergencies is somewhat correct - as if the guest Dr has read some printed material and now is an expert,

Yet is pretty incorrect about what goes down in real life. Be correct or don’t make things up. Makes me ask what else are you incorrect about?

  • Great content. And to the point.

Love listening to this podcast while on downtime at work, or when I’m just studying in my off time. Great job with providing such a variety of content with some pretty interesting medical professionals. I’ve been on the road now going on 4 years, not gonna lie, I’ve gotten complacent with my studies at times and got bad habits but it kind of brought me back to my old self where I’ve renewed my passion for the profession I dreamed of being involved in. Thanks so much!

Death, Taxes, and Shift Work - Dr. James Gilbertson
Q: What are the best dietary approaches for longevity and cardiovascular health in shift workers?
Focus on sustainable dietary patterns such as the Mediterranean or plant-based diets, which have strong evidence for reducing secondary cardiac events and improving overall mortality. Avoid heavy meals before sleep, favor light snacks during night shifts, and minimize sugary beverages; prefer carbonated water over soda if needing a drink, and limit non-nutritive sweeteners due to emerging microbiome data.
Death, Taxes, and Shift Work - Dr. James Gilbertson
Q: What can be done to decrease the elevated risks associated with shift work for front-line responders?
Adopt six pillars of lifestyle medicine—improve diet, increase physical activity, strengthen social connections, optimize sleep, avoid risky substances, and implement effective stress management. These strategies, tailored to shift work, can meaningfully reduce cancer, cardiovascular, and mental health risks. Practical steps include Mediterranean- or plant-forward eating, regular exercise (even routine commutes like biking), social engagement, structured sleep strategies (temperature control, blackout curtains, napping when appropriate), and mindfulness practices.
In Flight Medical Emergencies - Dr. Carvalho
Q: How do you assess and intervene during an in-flight emergency?
You should move the passenger to a more private area if possible, use the emergency medical kit, and make an assessment based on available resources.
In Flight Medical Emergencies - Dr. Carvalho
Q: What are the top in-flight medical emergencies?
The most common emergencies are neurological, cardiac, respiratory, and gastrointestinal issues.
In Flight Medical Emergencies - Dr. Carvalho
Q: What are some physiological considerations at flying that we should be aware of?
At altitude, atmospheric pressure is less and gases expand, leading to hypoxia as passengers receive less oxygen with each breath they take.
