  • The most insightful podcast about making a living as a Creative

I’m at a point in my life where it’s really difficult to navigate the balance with my family and my career. With a recent separation from the 9-5 life, and quite an overwhelming amount of freelance film work pouring in, all I want is to hear from people who have been where I’ve been to understand how to juggle this new way of life. I’m only 8 episodes in, but I’ve learned about my own life through others’ life experiences in every episode so far. The best way I can describe how I feel when I lis... more

  • Wish I had found this sooner!

This is exactly what I needed as I transition to the next stage of career/ life. Wish I found this pod sooner, but so happy I did. Been passing it on to all my crew peeps and friends! Would love to see it keep going, involving other departments and finding out what assets they create via rentals and other life things. Thanks Lars!

  • Feeding my love of creativity!

I love that these episodes and topics are transparent and informative, and in no way trying to lead you into one niche. Instead they encourage and show that there is space for your creative mind and creative works to come to life.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Adam Bricker ASC - Hacks, Chefs Table
Q: How did you get Hacks, and was it a stroke of luck or a calculated move?
It was a mix of luck and proactive effort: after successful Chef's Table work, I signed with an agency, read the pilot, and built a visual deck quickly; the meeting happened via Zoom the next day, and alignment with the creators solidified the opportunity.
Alec Puro - Composer, Drummer, and creator of ViralNoise
Q: What does a typical licensing deal look like and how do royalties get paid over time?
Royalties come from multiple streams (performing rights, mechanicals, neighboring rights, and publishing). The amount depends on where and how the music airs, how much of the song is used, and the percentage of ownership you hold. Distribution occurs quarterly, and ongoing licensing can provide a steady revenue stream alongside upfront fees.
Alec Puro - Composer, Drummer, and creator of ViralNoise
Q: How does licensing work when you're hired to write original music for a show?
If you're hired on a work-for-hire basis, you typically don't own the publishing or the copyright; you own the writer's share, while the show owns the publishing. For unscripted or docu-series, you may retain ownership of the music you wrote for the season while the show controls its use.
