  • Where’s my Grave Digger Pin?!?!

Erik Hanson is hands down the best horror podcaster recording today. He gets the best out of his guests with his funny, laid back, insanely well versed approach to horror movies. I eagerly wait on the new episodes and they always deliver.

  • A novel conceit

Maybe the idea of a year-by-year deep dive into horror films have been tackled before, but as I’ve never encountered them I found the conceit interesting. I’m looking forward to more installments and hoping that some of my more obscure favorites get reviewed.

VAN HELSING (2004) with Matthew Mercier LIVE FROM STOKERCON 2026
Q: What do you think about the balance between CGI spectacle and storytelling in Van Helsing?
The guest argues that the film overemphasizes effects at the expense of narrative clarity and tonal consistency, noting that a skilled director could have achieved a similar level of spectacle with tighter framing and clearer storytelling, which is a core flaw of the movie.
VAN HELSING (2004) with Matthew Mercier LIVE FROM STOKERCON 2026
Q: What got you into horror and how did your origins shape your view on Van Helsing?
Mercier describes his horror origins as a blend of classic cinema and later, modern monster storytelling, explaining that his affection for the genre comes from both traditional universal monsters and contemporary works, which informs his understanding of Van Helsing's ambition and its ultimate misfires.
