  • Great premise, fun discussions

Randomly found this podcast from a youtube short with Coady Willis. Started listening just to find that Ep, but enjoyed it so much i started from the 1st episode and am working my way through all of them. Host has a great attitude, guests are interesting (never knew Stephen Bissette was such a knowledgeable and entertaining guy), musicians, comic creators, lots of creative folks. • Where’s my Grave Digger Pin?!?!

Erik Hanson is hands down the best horror podcaster recording today. He gets the best out of his guests with his funny, laid back, insanely well versed approach to horror movies. I eagerly wait on the new episodes and they always deliver.

  • A novel conceit

Maybe the idea of a year-by-year deep dive into horror films have been tackled before, but as I’ve never encountered them I found the conceit interesting. I’m looking forward to more installments and hoping that some of my more obscure favorites get reviewed.

BEST OF EPISODE: THE THING (1982) with Thomas G Waites
Q: What did you learn from Carpenter that you've carried into your own directing?
He learned to separate love of cinema from dealing with production challenges, to block, rehearse, and revisit the script to ensure the scene's core remains intact, which Waites applied in Target.
BEST OF EPISODE: THE THING (1982) with Thomas G Waites
Q: How did the ensemble cast shape the film's development during rehearsals?
Waites recalled the two weeks of rehearsal that allowed the cast to bond, which greatly aided the film's character development and the dynamic on screen.
BEST OF EPISODE: THE THING (1982) with Thomas G Waites
Q: What was it like working with John Carpenter on The Thing?
Waites emphasized Carpenter's leadership, directness, and mentorship, describing how he guided actors through problems, helped him trust his own directing instincts, and valued collaboration despite the intense shoot.
THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE (2001) with Lindsay Hallam & Stephen Bissette
Q: What makes The Devil's Backbone a personal story for Del Toro?
The guests discuss how Del Toro's own experiences with trauma, family disruption, and the attack of industry pressures informed the ghostly parable; the film doubles as a meditation on father figures, memory, and the impact of war on children, turning personal pain into universal horror.
BEST OF EPISODE: AMITYVILLE 2 (1982) with Diane Franklin
Q: Was it the Invisible Man that you saw growing up that made you want to act?
An earlier experience, including watching classic films and seeing strong female leads, inspired me to pursue acting, and I realized there was room for more in the industry.
