Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Simon Wallace in conversation with Roger Kneebone
Q: How did your early influences and education shape the way you work later in life?
He describes a shift from formal study in Oxford to real-world practice, the influence of Miles Davis and jazz from a young age, and how studying in environments like New York with Barry Harris reframed his understanding of harmony and improvisation, ultimately informing his collaborative approach.
Simon Wallace in conversation with Roger Kneebone
Q: So Simon, how do you describe yourself when you look back over a long career?
He sees himself as an accidental musician who found his path through a wide range of experiences, from jazz and pop to film scores and TV music, always driven by a deep love of music and a curiosity to learn from others.
Michael Booth in conversation with Roger Kneebone
Q: How does it work to find a book when it's missing or misplaced?
It starts with preparation: gathering as much information as possible about the book, considering its author, title, pages, publisher, and even spine logos; then a systematic search through likely areas, checking shelves around the expected spot, and sometimes looking under adjacent sections to account for misfiling or reader-induced shifts.
Michael Booth in conversation with Roger Kneebone
Q: And you, as I said, you've been here longer than anybody else at the library. So tell me about your role here.
I mainly work at the issue desk assisting members with issuing and returning books, but I also actively search for missing books, track down where misfiles might be, and help guide people to the right sections based on their needs.
Rachel Vickery in conversation with Roger Kneebone
Q: How did your own gymnastics career inform what you do now?
Early exposure to intense training and the challenges of performing under pressure shaped my understanding of how the body and mind react under stress, which I now apply to helping others optimize their performance.
