#90 An Australian backyard astronomer helped NASA find 100 planets! Astronomy award winner Chris Stockdale used his home observatory in Churchill, Victoria to track distant stars and find the planets in their orbit. What a chat.
Q: What happens when you return your findings to NASA? What do they do with that then?
The findings are compiled into a dataset and evaluated for repeatability; once enough evidence accumulates, professional astronomers may take it up and co-author papers, with follow-up observations using facilities like JWST if the star is bright enough.

Q: Do you remember the first moment when you realised that you might actually be seeing evidence of a new planet, one that no other human was aware of yet?
I had the observatory up and running, targeted a specific star, and saw a clear dip for the first time; it felt like a breakthrough moment that suggested a planet had been detected, which was later confirmed and tied to a published paper.

Q: Is it a bad news story that Titan is not currently habitable?
While it's disappointing, the results show that life may be more complex to find. The study reveals just how special Earth is and the specific conditions needed for life.

Q: What sort of creatures could live in an environment like Titan's ocean encased in a hundred kilometer thick shell of ice?
The creatures could be similar to extremophiles found in Earth's deep oceans, or entirely different forms of life that we cannot yet imagine.

Q: What are some of the characteristics of Titan that make it a candidate for habitability?
Titan has ice with a subsurface ocean of liquid water, an atmosphere filled with carbon and nitrogen, and energy sources from radioactive heating, making it a unique candidate for life.
