  • Sex and pornography addiction

I’m very happy I came across your podcast, I have been searching for something I have known about, lived and loved a person who has suffered with ( sexting, porn ) I have understood the damage these addictions and behaviors cause. In some cases loss of life. I’m so happy you acknowledge the DSM does not have an area for this tremendous life issue.

There is so much shame attached to this, so yes, it cannot be an environment that is very judgmental.

    Thank you

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

'Finding the Way Through': Rewriting Recovery with Partner Sensitivity
Q: Why is this workbook so different from existing recovery materials?
The workbook integrates partner sensitivity across every chapter, emphasizes the betrayed partner's experience from the outset, and combines education with practical, group-ready exercises, making it useful both in groups and for individual work.
Empathy in Recovery with Dr. Stevie Cotet
Q: Do you ever ask partners to take the empathy assessment, and what have you found when both partners take it?
I have not asked a partner to take the empathy assessment routinely, but many do; often partners show higher effective empathy and lower cognitive empathy, while the betrayer may show the opposite pattern, and shared feedback can normalize differences and guide growth.
Empathy in Recovery with Dr. Stevie Cotet
Q: Is there a nature versus nurture component to empathy? Can someone be taught to be more empathetic, or is it restricted by temperament?
There is both a natural predisposition and a large nurture component; empathy can be learned and developed, but the extent and manner will depend on individual history, trauma, and ongoing management of personality traits like narcissism.
Empathy in Recovery with Dr. Stevie Cotet
Q: Maybe we should start with what is empathy? How would you define or explain empathy when you're talking about it to folks?
Empathy is an internal cognitive and emotional process that should lead to an external set of actions; there are three components—cognitive, affective (effective), and empathic action—and people differ in how they exhibit each, with barriers like shame affecting the expression.
Male Betrayal Trauma: Breaking the Silence with Adam Nisenson
Q: Do you notice that there's a different impact on male betrayed partners if their partner is having an affair versus has an addiction pattern that they've identified with?
Yes, men tend to approach situations differently based on whether their partner has an affair or an addiction, with diagnosed addictions often helping to depersonalize the betrayal for them.
