  • Overall, good show, however…

…some objectivity lost on the MAGA Red Wave show. The host and guest got very upset with the talk of deportations and the loss of a workforce. Getting rid of illegals affecting the price of things… so as long as you get your cheap services and cheap labour, often trafficked and exploited, that’s okay to have illegals? Wait and see.

Generally, a good show with objectivity and common sense. Despite the above episode losing some of that - yep, discussed the negatives of the Democrats, but not wit... more

#478 - Five Partitions of Modern Asia: A Dialogue with Sam Dalrymple
Q: How did Burma become the first partition and what was distinct about it?
Sam outlines Burma's unique path, the anti-colonial context, economic shifts, and how Burmese politics and economic changes in the 1920s–1930s set the stage for its separation from the Indian empire.
#478 - Five Partitions of Modern Asia: A Dialogue with Sam Dalrymple
Q: Was Pakistan the idea of breaking off and eventually becoming its own thing to be like a Muslim state?
The guest explains the evolving concept of Pakistan, noting Jinnah's initially liberal, bargaining-oriented aims and how violence and political strategy shifted the idea toward a separate nation-state with broader religious-nationalist implications.
#478 - Five Partitions of Modern Asia: A Dialogue with Sam Dalrymple
Q: Tell our listeners just kind of who you are, professionally, academically. I believe this is your first book.
Sam Dalrymple describes his background as a historian and filmmaker, his work with oral histories and declassified archives, and how these informed his book on the five partitions and the making of modern Asia.
#481 - The Ottoman Empire and the Supernatural: A Dialogue with Marinos Sariyannis
Q: Tell us how you define the Ottoman concepts of the natural, the supernatural, and the preternatural, and why these distinctions matter for your study.
The Ottomans inherited a framework from late medieval Islamic philosophy; the natural domain is that which can be grasped by human intellect, while the supernatural breaks the divine order and includes miracles. The preternatural covers the inexplicable or unusual phenomena that can sometimes be repeated or observed but do not fit into the established divine order. These distinctions are essential because they structure how people interpreted phenomena from astrology to talismanic practices within everyday life.
#477 - Can Schools Save Democracy?: A Dialogue with James Traub
Q: What's the problem now?
Schools became to be seen as some type of understanding civic duty, and we get civics... but now... people will say, we don't learn about civics anymore.
