Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep. 331 Jon Gordon, The Power of Positive Habits
Q: How do you recommend developing winning habits to help teams perform better?
Jon Gordon describes presenting short, bite-sized habits that teams can read, discuss daily, and implement, coupled with an action plan and a 30-day personalized implementation program to turn habits into concrete results.
Ep. 329 DJ Bakker, Greensboro Swarm
Q: How do you manage practice tempo and live corrections to reinforce spacing and decision-making?
We emphasize short, intense practices with controlled scrimmages where stops and scores drive the next rep. Corrections happen in live time, and every possession matters, so players learn to play quickly with correct spacing and sharp reads.
Ep. 329 DJ Bakker, Greensboro Swarm
Q: Can you describe how you approach offensive spacing and the role of the bigs in this system?
We want the bigs to stay flat on the baseline when possible, with responsive options to step up or pop depending on the angle of the screen. The goal is to create a three-on-two or three-on-three dynamic by filling behind the ball handler and keeping the top of the floor spacious for ball reversals and paint attacks.
Ep. 329 DJ Bakker, Greensboro Swarm
Q: Let's make believe that some of our listeners aren't familiar with spacing terms; what does spacing mean to your system?
Spacing means giving the ball room to breathe, running wide and long, and placing players in exact spots so there's room to attack the paint and read the defense. It's about three baseline players occupying key lines, with two players spaced to maximize driving lanes and read-based decisions.
Ep. 321 David Thorpe pt. 1, The Godfather of Player Development
Q: What are some of the things that you look for in a young person that you're gonna coach?
Thorpe looks for a capacity for work and learning in potential coaching clients.
