  • Interesting idea for a podcast, but the first episode I listened to involved pretending to solve pretend problems. Sadly, a waste of time, unfortunately. (Climate change)

  • One of my favorite podcasts!

Spencer is a wonderful host - curious, great questions, articulate, deeply knowledgeable across disciplines, and he senses so skillfully into when/if to interrupt the guest to redirect. A very generous conversationalist.

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Beyond the assumption that humans are rational (with Barry Schwartz)
Q: What would the world look like if people behaved like the rational agents in these models?
It would lead to a loss in the capacity for people to think wisely about decisions because it oversimplifies the decisions we usually face in life.
Beyond the assumption that humans are rational (with Barry Schwartz)
Q: How does your perspective relate to this idea of bounded rationality?
Schwartz agrees that while it is true we can't consider everything in complex decisions, he argues that the limits imposed by rational choice theory are the wrong ones, focusing too narrowly on quantifiable aspects.
Do facts have an expiration date? (with Samuel Arbesman)
Q: What is your perspective on the right attitude toward scientific knowledge?
We should have epistemic humility and recognize that scientific knowledge is constantly evolving.
From prisoner to escaping inner prisons (with Shaka Senghor)
Q: What is the right relationship to have to a mistake like that?
It's essential to recognize that not everyone will agree with your efforts to take responsibility, and we must focus on allowing people back into society after serving their sentences.
From prisoner to escaping inner prisons (with Shaka Senghor)
Q: How do you think that violence feeds into violent crime and issues in our society?
I think we've over indexed on the idea that all testosterone-driven behavior is toxic, while violence is a human issue, not just a masculine one.
