Kathleen Rooney: A Chicago Author and Flaneuse Whose Love of Walking Helps to Shape Her Writing
Q: How did you decide on the route that you would have her walk in the book?
I wanted it to be long and heroic, to almost defy credulity, so readers would feel that she has walked far, connecting her journey to the structure of her life.
Samantha Anderson: A Proposal to Transform Downtown Chicago by Pedestrianizing Part of It
Q: How do you hope to see Chicago evolve in that time?
I hope to see that it becomes more walkable for sure and to see some of the initiatives being focused downtown spread throughout all 77 community areas, especially on the south and west sides that have been historically disinvested from.
Samantha Anderson: A Proposal to Transform Downtown Chicago by Pedestrianizing Part of It
Q: For local policymakers who are potentially listening to this, what would you like them to take away from your recommendations?
Our big tagline was culture and connection. And I think realizing not only the social importance of those two things, but also the economic importance of those two things is kind of the big takeaway.
Samantha Anderson: A Proposal to Transform Downtown Chicago by Pedestrianizing Part of It
Q: What were the recommendations that you arrived at in the end?
Our bigger story became the cultural mile, which we found out existed maybe three days before we submitted the proposal. The first recommendation was to transform Michigan Avenue from Wacker to Monroe and make it more pedestrian focused, so allowing it to have pedestrians, cyclists and bus only.
Samantha Anderson: A Proposal to Transform Downtown Chicago by Pedestrianizing Part of It
Q: How has Chicago played a role in your education and in shaping your future direction, do you think?
It has made me more interested in kind of the way people use space, especially with it being like the most segregated city and seeing those relationships there that felt very similar to things I was seeing in Mississippi.
