  • Get to know Philly!

If you haven’t listened to City Cast Philly I highly recommend especially as newer to Philly. Every week there are new podcasts that help you know what’s happening in the city from food and events to politics. The episode on the impacts of gun violence was particularly moving. Trenae (and Matt) do an excellent job engaging their guests and help their listeners know what’s happening in Philly!

You know what you’re getting from each episode based on the title. I like it because it allows me to filter through episodes so I can focus on issues important to me.

I think Philly Cast has done a spectacular job of selecting a host. Trenae Nuri, your flexibility and relatability as a host is wonderful. I really appreciate the questions you ask as a way to get to the heart of: “what is this and why do I care” - from everything to the overspending by the Housing Authority to the best pizza’s in... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

How Much Are We Supposed to Tip?
Q: How has tipping changed post-pandemic in everyday Philly life?
Tipping has become more variable and situational, with people noticing automatic gratuities and app-based percentages; many rely on a default of around 20% but adjust up or down based on service quality and overall experience.
Can Slot Machines At Your Corner Store Save PA’s Budget?
Q: Currently, what is the political makeup of our state legislature and how is that affecting budget progress and potential deals?
The legislature is split with a Democratic-controlled House and a Republican-controlled Senate, plus a Democratic governor. This division makes it harder to push through bills, but there is some momentum as members trade proposals and gauge votes. The dynamic means compromises are possible but fragile, and deadlines still carry political consequences as election year pressure intensifies.
Can Slot Machines At Your Corner Store Save PA’s Budget?
Q: All right, Stephen, I want to talk about the skilled games, aka slot machines now, because of a new law that got passed. What is the latest on this particular issue?
The latest is that a court ruling has recognized skill games as slot machines, which means they now fall under casino-like regulation. This could bring in significant tax revenue—potentially around $2 billion depending on how it's taxed and allocated—though the final shape of the policy and where that money goes remains debated, with considerations ranging from transportation to social services.
'Your City Could Be Better': How Denver Is Fixing Its Sidewalks — Presented By City Cast Philly
Q: How long will it take to fix all sidewalks under the new system?
Estimates suggest roughly nine years to address around 300 miles of missing sidewalks and 1,200 miles of existing ones, though officials say this depends on funding, contracts, and project phasing.
'Your City Could Be Better': How Denver Is Fixing Its Sidewalks — Presented By City Cast Philly
Q: Is the policy shift realistic for other cities, or is Denver an exception?
The episode notes that while some states and cities have similar homeowner responsibility models, Denver's approach—shifting to the city and funding via a broad-based fee—could serve as a template, though results depend on local politics, governance, and funding priorities.
