  • A podcast after my own heart.

For years liking movie scores was seen as very uncool especially when your young but as the years have gone by I have discovered so many fellow mates and others out there love them too. Erik Woods and his team are my kind of fans and listening to this podcast just cements why I love film music so much. It’s like sitting in a room and being part of their conversation. Keep up the good work

  • Movie Music & Mental Musings

Erik Woods and the whole team behind the content on this superb long running podcast is extensive in its back catalogue. Prolific in its output and relentless in getting both popular contemporary subjects covered but also exploring vintage music and characters behind them. Simply unmissable. Subscribe and you won’t be disappointed. Why it’s taken me years before adding a review is unforgivable.

Amazing production value with particularly good editing. The interview was super interesting and sounded great. The hosts voice is so hypnotic I could listen to him all day.

Talking Soundtracks: Interview With Jeff Beal
Q: How did you handle pacing for a two-hour plus film with long, expository sections?
Beal discusses test screenings and the importance of maintaining engagement during lengthy setup sequences, using varied textures and musical spaces to keep listeners immersed and to present a concert-like yet cinematic experience.
Talking Soundtracks: Interview With Jeff Beal
Q: What was your approach to the orchestration and the balance between electronics and live performance?
He describes writing for a big opera-sized orchestra, with electronics integrated at key points to complement, rather than dominate, the acoustic palette. The electronics are used to intensify certain scenes and give texture a contemporary edge, while the live players provide emotional range and humanity.
Talking Soundtracks: Interview With Jeff Beal
Q: First of all, let's talk about your new score for Metropolis. How did that come about?
Beal explains that he was drawn to Metropolis as a finale to a trilogy of German silent films, finding its scale and themes (industrial anxiety, dehumanization, man versus machine) highly relevant and inspiring for a modern audience. He wanted to write a score that could resonate beyond its time and bring new generations into the experience, using a symphonic approach with selective electronics.
Talking Soundtracks: Interview With Simon Franglen
Q: What do you feel is James Horner's legacy to film music?
Franglen believes Horner emphasized the importance of thematic music in film, proving that music can emotionally connect with the audience beyond textures and repetition.
Talking Soundtracks: Interview With Simon Franglen
Q: How did you first get the nod that you were scoring the Avatar movies?
Simon Franglen shares that James Cameron phoned him up to ask if he wanted to score the films, having previously worked together on pre-scoring music.
