Cinema Junkie Book Club: 'Black Film' by David F. Walker
Q: Does Ryan Coogler also scare the industry because he's sort of outsmarting them at their own game, not in terms of what he puts on the screen, but how he negotiates control over his film?
Walker explains that Coogler's deal is part of a broader pattern in which Black filmmakers negotiate greater control and market impact, which in turn unsettles traditional studio dynamics, but acknowledges it's not entirely unprecedented and points to a line of influence among Black executives and filmmakers.
Joe Bob Briggs and Halfway to Halloween
Q: What do you think it is about these films that kind of give them their staying power?
It's the rebel element, the spitting in the eye of the establishment that resonated with audiences and made these films memorable.
Joe Bob Briggs and Halfway to Halloween
Q: What got you initially interested in film and heading down this path?
I was an investigative reporter at the Dallas Times Herald. The film critic job came open, and I wanted to do it to rest from my investigative stories.
Celebrating Asian Cinema, Old and New
Q: How did the filmmaker go about finding the families represented in 'Between Goodbyes'?
Jota Mun met Mika, one of the subjects, at a conference for adoptees and they decided to collaborate on a project highlighting representation within their community.
Celebrating Asian Cinema, Old and New
Q: What makes the documentary 'Between Goodbyes' stand out in the context of typical adoption narratives?
The film inversely portrays the story from the perspective of the original mother searching for her daughter, challenging conventional narratives that often focus solely on the adoptees looking for their biological parents.
