Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Cinema Junkie and Midday Movies go on a summer viewing vacation
Q: So how does Supergirl hold up, and what stood out to you in this first summer discussion?
Beth notes the film is fun with a charming lead performance, while Yazdi highlights the film's visual inspirations and its balance of action and heart, though both agree some plot choices feel muddled.
'Dead, White and Blue' -- A green movie!
Q: What inspired you to pursue this path of using archival footage?
Inspiration comes from exploitation filmmakers of the 50s and 60s, and a desire to work with limited resources by turning archival material into entertaining, subversive stories that comment on modern society.
'Dead, White and Blue' -- A green movie!
Q: For this particular film, where did you find the government footage and the material you drew on?
The material largely comes from government productions and public-domain films, which are available through sources like the Library of Congress and the National Archives, allowing me to repurpose and remix them creatively.
'Dead, White and Blue' -- A green movie!
Q: What is a green movie?
A green movie is a feature film made completely out of recycled material, using footage that has been previously produced, re-edited with a new storyline and dialogue to create a brand new movie.
Cinema Junkie Book Club: 'Black Film' by David F. Walker
Q: Does Ryan Coogler also scare the industry because he's sort of outsmarting them at their own game, not in terms of what he puts on the screen, but how he negotiates control over his film?
Walker explains that Coogler's deal is part of a broader pattern in which Black filmmakers negotiate greater control and market impact, which in turn unsettles traditional studio dynamics, but acknowledges it's not entirely unprecedented and points to a line of influence among Black executives and filmmakers.
