  • A GEM

This is the only film criticism I listen to. A great breadth of critics, knowledgeable host and fascinating unsung movies. I get all my viewing ideas here and really enjoy listening to the show even if I’m uninterested in the films.

  • Pretty lame

The reviewers give overly favorable reviews in an effort to promote Hollywood movies and movie going. The women who’ve been on for years are the worst. I enjoy Tim Cogshell and the animation reviewer — he’s the toughest and the only one on the show deserving the title “critic”— as well as the skilled host Larry Mantel. Otherwise, it’s a wash.

  • Love the show but

Can we get the point of view from ONE straight guy? It would balance the reviews out a bit.

  • Bro movie talk

Sampled the 28 Years Later episode, tuned out after the film was blithely described as Danny Boyle’s first sequel (see Trainspotter 2), and the island of Great Britain as “England”. Dude.

  • Frustrating show

I hate to say it, but I cannot listen to it when Tim Cogshell is on. If I see that it’s going to be an all female reviewer show then I will listen, but so often Tim and another reviewer, can’t remember his name, give way too much away and it’s just uncomfortable for me to listen to. I’m an AFI grad, love film, but there are months I won’t listen to this one.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Feature: The National Film Board of Canada’s history of experimental animation
Q: What is the National Film Board of Canada, and what was its role with early animation?
The NFB was created in 1939 to replace a struggling wartime film bureaucracy; it served as a peacetime, government-supported hub for film, training films, newsreels, and public-service announcements, and it attracted artists worldwide who developed pioneering animation techniques under state support.
Feature: A new book tells the story behind Hitler’s efforts to infiltrate Hollywood
Q: How did the studio heads thread the needle between being proactive and not appearing overly aggressive given isolationist sentiment?
They navigated a delicate balance by publicly countering Nazi influence while preserving business norms, leveraging discreet espionage and behind-the-scenes coordination among moguls, and gradually bringing anti-Nazi messaging into films and public appearances as War approached.
Feature: A new book tells the story behind Hitler’s efforts to infiltrate Hollywood
Q: So share with us when this anti-Nazi movement really began in Hollywood.
It began in 1933, within weeks of Hitler taking office, with Goebbels prompting agents to infiltrate Los Angeles and start a three-pronged campaign that included anti-Semitic pamphleteering, infiltration on docks and in factories, and attempts to turn Hollywood into a propaganda machine.
Feature: The American Cinematheque Podcast asks filmmakers what movies have stuck with them
Q: What is the concept behind the Cinematheque Podcast and how does it relate to programming the festivals?
The podcast centers on guests recounting formative cinema memories, which then informs how they assemble and script their film festivals and seasonal programs, blending deep film history with personal storytelling.
Feature: The American Cinematheque Podcast asks filmmakers what movies have stuck with them
Q: How many theaters are planned for the Cinematheque's expansion and what is the broader strategy?
The plan is to operate four theaters across Los Angeles, using existing venues like the Los Feliz 3 and the Egyptian as anchors, with a new cathedral-like venue to expand premieres and student programming.
