  • 💯 Best Podcast.

I love the Christian History Almanac! I appreciate the variety of topics, Dan’s fair presentation of a vast array of traditions, and his humor. He may have the voice of a siren, as the moment I have enough quiet to listen to an episode my children come running 😉 it’s been a helpful supplement to our homeschool history time, which my eleven year old LOVES, and the icing on the cake is the Christmas episodes in December. We love those. Thanks for sharing so many fascinating stories with us about ... more

  • Great Podcast

I love this podcast. I have been a longtime listener. The weekday podcasts are great but I love the weekend edition even more. If there was just this weekend edition it would be with it. One thing I always come back for is the ending where he reads the scripture, has the funny one liners, tells us everything is going to be ok. I love this especially as a PhD student in history at Liberty University and I have a special love for Church History.

  • Dan, coffee, & colored pencils

7am finds me with an open sketchbook, a cup of coffee and some colored pencils. I like to start my day with creativity. Then I added Dan Van V to the mix. After hearing Sarah Condon on the Mockingbird podcast mention she listens to 1517.org, I thought I would give it a try. Now my husband & I listen together and talk about Christian history throughout our week. I’m constantly sharing this podcast with others. If you want a terrific way to start your day, give Dan a listen!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Thursday, April 23, 2026
Q: Are there events or people in church history that could be remembered or taught about through food other than the obvious Lord's Supper?
Yes. The agape feast or love feast offers a model where meals become a shared ritual—blessing, serving, storytelling, hymn singing, and communal bonding—without class distinctions, illustrating how early Christians ate together to remember God's work and scripture, a practice later echoed by the Moravians and observed by John Wesley.
Monday, April 27, 2026
Q: What is the practical takeaway for someone who fears they might wander away spiritually?
The host emphasizes talking with a pastor and trusted friends, examining scripture such as the parable of the sower, and focusing on Christ's assurances rather than personal certainty alone.
Monday, April 27, 2026
Q: Terrell asks whether a baptized person can walk away from their faith and be lost, and how assurance should be understood.
Dan explains different traditions view on perseverance, noting that Augustine, Calvin, and Lutheran confessions address salvation as a gift kept by grace, while leaving room for pastoral guidance, assurance, and ongoing faith as responses to the gospel.
Tuesday, April 7, 2026
Q: Dr. Rick wondered what the connection was between Andrew Murray and the Dutch Reformed in South Africa and the Apartheid.
The discussion clarifies that Murray's influence was through his role in promoting missions and revivalism within the Dutch Reformed tradition, which interacted with South Africa's colonial church structures; however, the Belhar Confession later criticized apartheid as theologically incompatible with true Christian unity, showing a movement within the church toward rejecting racial segregation.
Monday, April 6, 2026
Q: Do you know anything about Dingus Day?
Yes, it started as a blend of Easter celebration and pagan spring rites, then evolved into a Polish immigrant festival in the United States, with activities like water games, willow whips, and pierogies, and it's even been referenced in modern pop culture.
