  • 💯 Best Podcast.

I love the Christian History Almanac! I appreciate the variety of topics, Dan’s fair presentation of a vast array of traditions, and his humor. He may have the voice of a siren, as the moment I have enough quiet to listen to an episode my children come running 😉 it’s been a helpful supplement to our homeschool history time, which my eleven year old LOVES, and the icing on the cake is the Christmas episodes in December. We love those. Thanks for sharing so many fascinating stories with us about ... more

  • Great Podcast

I love this podcast. I have been a longtime listener. The weekday podcasts are great but I love the weekend edition even more. If there was just this weekend edition it would be with it. One thing I always come back for is the ending where he reads the scripture, has the funny one liners, tells us everything is going to be ok. I love this especially as a PhD student in history at Liberty University and I have a special love for Church History.

  • Dan, coffee, & colored pencils

7am finds me with an open sketchbook, a cup of coffee and some colored pencils. I like to start my day with creativity. Then I added Dan Van V to the mix. After hearing Sarah Condon on the Mockingbird podcast mention she listens to 1517.org, I thought I would give it a try. Now my husband & I listen together and talk about Christian history throughout our week. I’m constantly sharing this podcast with others. If you want a terrific way to start your day, give Dan a listen!

Q: Dave in Levittown asked what Easter is called in different languages and why the holiday is dated the way it is.
Dan explains the etymology shifts from Esthermonoth as noted by Bede to Ostern in Germanic languages, and how the ecclesiastical equinox and the full moon determine Easter Sunday based on Passover alignment.

Q: Is it okay for Ambrose to use podcasts if you can't get to church?
Dan suggests that podcasts and other media can be a way to engage with the Word, but emphasizes that the church is the people and the ideal is to participate in person when possible, while acknowledging the historical use of media to spread faith.

Q: Erin in Ladera Ranch asks about the phrasing of 'this is my body, broken for you' in John 19 and why some texts say 'broken' while others do not.
The host explains that the Greek text does not explicitly include the word 'broken' in some manuscript traditions, and that later scribes added it to align with common liturgical expectations; the key point is the symbolic understanding of Christ's body and the church's teaching moments when translations differ.

Q: Question number four, tell me more about the regulation and the shift toward non-sectarian broadcasting?
Regulatory bodies and agreements with NBC, CBS, and the National Council of Churches limited sectarian airtime, pushing religious content toward non-sectarian space and leading to the rise of independent Christian stations and later NRB-led networks.

Q: Question number three, isn't there an important Lutheran component to this story?
