Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Transition Milk; Leads to Stronger Calves
Q: Before we get into the details, could you tell us a bit about yourself and how you arrived at studying transition milk?
I'm Ryan Davies, a veterinary surgeon who moved into preventative medicine and dairy consulting; my work with SCCL and other clients led me to investigate how excess colostrum and transition milk could influence calf health, starting from a farmer's observation in a West Wales block calving herd and a Welsh government–funded study.
How Much Sun Is Too Much?
Q: What factors should people be using? Ideally, you've said not once a day.
Choose SPF 30 or 50 with a four- or five-star UVA/UVB protection, consider broad-spectrum formulations, and prefer mineral/physical options if skin irritation is a concern; reapply every two hours.
How Much Sun Is Too Much?
Q: Do you think that's because the general public usually only go out in the sun when they're on holiday?
Susanna suggests that outdoor exposure is more constant for agricultural workers, leading to higher sunburn risk; awareness and daily protective habits are crucial for reducing melanoma risk.
European Dairy Farmers Congress 2026
Q: What can attendees expect from the Chester Congress?
Expect a three-day program with conference sessions, workshops (including cost of production-focused ones for EDF members), eight farm visits, social events like a Chester Zoo dinner and a gala at Chester Cathedral, and ample networking opportunities.
European Dairy Farmers Congress 2026
Q: What is EDF and how long has it been going?
EDF is a club of dairy farmers across Europe focusing on cost of production; it was established in 1990 and has grown to include many member countries and a rich program of congresses and workshops.
