  • Love the focus on metacognition

i’m really enjoying the show and the focus on conceptualize. As someone with aphantasiahia I thought visualization was beyond my grasp so I never really tried. Now seeing… or rather getting better at this skill and I can see the impact on my game and elo improvement.

  • Excellent exercices and resources for adult improvers

Chess is hard. Solving chess puzzles and problems in your mind? Even harder!

This podcast really forces you to visualize without looking at a board. Regular tactics puzzles become simple and easy, by comparison.

Think of it as weightlifting or strengthening exercises for your chess brain. Really helps with visualization and calculation.

Highly recommended, especially for adult improvers.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

❓ Blitz Hurts Slow Chess? (Q&A)
Q: What's the practical takeaway from today's discussion on blitz versus slow chess?
The practical takeaway is to use blitz and bullet to build comfort with time pressure and quick pattern recognition, but to actively protect your slow-game development by limiting blitz exposure before important events and by deliberately engaging in deep, rational analysis during training.
❓ Stretch or Conceptualization Muscle Growth? (Q&A)
Q: Against the backdrop of your recent article on putting blindfold into the context of actual play, do you still believe that blindfold works the conceptualization muscle, or is it more about the warm up for the actual game or training session?
Both: the stretch acts as a warm up to make the rest of the game feel easier by comparison, and it also contributes to long-term improvement in conceptualization muscle when integrated with regular practice.
❓ Are Visual Thinkers Better? (Q&A)
Q: Do visual thinkers have an inherent advantage in chess, or is it coincidence that most of the top players emphasize visualizing as a visual experience?
The host argues that there isn't an inherent advantage tied to visual thinking; rather, most masters appear visual because they started playing early and maintained continuous engagement, creating a correlation. Over time, both visual and verbal thinkers can reach high levels, as the brain's internal chess model becomes clear with practice. The early stage can be tougher for verbal thinkers, but with persistence and the right approach to observe and refine their internal model, verbal thinkers can achieve momentum and success just as visual thinkers do.
❓ Kids and Conceptualization? (Q&A)
Q: Is any of it useful for kids or are they better off just playing a ton of games and not overthinking it at this age?
Aiden explains that while his framework was developed for adult learners, many core ideas still apply to kids. The techniques can be valuable after children have a basic chess understanding, and with younger players the emphasis should be on engagement and gradually building working memory and conceptual grasp through approachable exercises, including blindfold work, rather than forcing complex abstractions too early.
❓ Full Blindfold Goal? (Q&A)
Q: What would be the quickest way to achieve playing a full game blindfolded?
Aiden outlines five guidelines to develop the skills needed for blindfold chess, emphasizing clarity, separate training for chess memorization, and consistent practice.
