Find Your Staff Designer Archetype, with Jessica Harllee
Q: How do you navigate working on projects outside your comfort zone without losing confidence?
She emphasizes reframing each project as an opportunity to learn and demonstrate growth, highlighting personal goals, and documenting what's learned to strengthen future performance reviews.
Find Your Staff Designer Archetype, with Jessica Harllee
Q: What archetypes do you identify with, and how did you discover them?
She identifies with the architect archetype, appreciating systems thinking and the ability to create a unifying architecture that scales for businesses of different sizes, while acknowledging the value of supporting roles in balancing complementary strengths.
Find Your Staff Designer Archetype, with Jessica Harllee
Q: How did you land on Shopify and what influenced your decision to switch teams internally?
Jessica explains that she moved from growth-focused work to a broader retail role to align more with her interests in workflows, product ownership, and the systems dimension of design. The internal transfer process was formal but facilitated by existing relationships and a strategic handoff with her former team.
How to Actually Ship Big Ideas, with Edwin Morris
Q: How did you handle criticism from engineers on your initial version, and what did you learn from that feedback?
The initial version was not as useful because it relied too much on the traditional workflow; a critical engineer challenged it, which led me to a better version that unified cross-product workflows and proved the value of iterating with early, outside-the-loop feedback.
How to Actually Ship Big Ideas, with Edwin Morris
Q: What was the central problem you were trying to solve with the incident-management workflow at Datadog?
The problem was that when you're triaging incidents, you have to switch across dashboards, Slack, and incident tools; I proposed a unified 'incident mode' that surfaces relevant Datadog data in a sidebar and enables easier navigation and collaboration, reducing context switching.
