A long overdue reappraisal of the Carry On films, with two very well read hosts pointing what works and what has become problematic over time. Importantly they consider the Carry On’s in their context, comparing them to trends in comedy and film at the time, so they don’t blame Carry On’s for their dated material, they explain why it happened. The hosts also have a genuine affection for the stars of the series. As a result this show will appeal to both Carry On fans and those critical of the fra... more
Like most people of a particular age in the UK, I have a strong familiarity with and fondness for the Carry On films without thinking all that many of them are particularly good movies. I think they’re a very good topic of discussion for a podcast though, mainly because of the talented and much loved regular cast members, and because the longevity of the series turns it into a kind of social history. I think this show walks the line well between genuine appreciation of the films and placing them... more
Only on the third episode and loving it. Really reassuring to hear two excellent presenters giving not only a great review of the films and their history and acting context, but also giving a well reasoned, socio-political, overview as well. Unexpectedly excellent. I have little doubt there will be multiple reviewers who are offended by this podcast as it makes them feel bad about being racist/sexist (delete as appropriate)… happy days!
Fantastic accompaniment to the series of great films. After a few episodes I felt more like I was listening to friends than strangers
I wasn’t familiar with the Carry on… franchise as it isn’t a staple in the US, but it’s been so much fun listening to these two. Carry on Screaming and Carry on Cleo are fantastic movies, so I’m glad this podcast introduced them to me.
