  • Variable sound levels spoil the interesting content

I enjoy the interesting content but this podcast is sometimes a difficult listen because sound levels jump all over the place. Can be almost unlistenable.

  • Good guests but Christian needs to interrupt them less

The intro is a bit heavy on the hubris.

  • I never realised transport is so interesting

I found this podcast because I love trains but I have been educated about transport generally. Our transport infrastructure is crucial to our economy and wellbeing and each week I surprise myself by how engrossing the subject is. The two presenters really know their stuff and the link with politics and geography always holds my interest

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

3/19 Past glories and future prospects for Britain’s railways
Q: Is there a viable role for private investment in rail, or is the burden ultimately on government funding?
Caplan argues that many members are willing to take risks with private investment, particularly in rail stations and private-public partnerships, as long as there is a credible pipeline and predictable policy environment.
3/19 Past glories and future prospects for Britain’s railways
Q: What about the pause on Midland Main Line electrification—what does that imply for future projects and the industry's confidence?
He explains that the pause clashes with the government's delivery image, suggesting a need to show real progress on in-progress schemes while maintaining support for high-benefit projects like HS2, and advocates better visibility of future pipelines.
3/19 Past glories and future prospects for Britain’s railways
Q: So Darren, do you think we at least have a government that supports the railways, or are there still significant concerns?
Caplan confirms some positive signs in spending and rail reform rhetoric, but argues for clearer, long-term strategies, a continuous pipeline of work, and a definite lead for GBR to reduce planning drift and improve investment certainty.
4/9 Wales’s rail vision plus Michael Portillo’s outlook
Q: What is the overarching vision for rail in Wales?
The vision, Today, Tomorrow, Together, aims to unify rail planning and funding across Wales and the Borders, deliver major infrastructure outside the Valleys, integrate with Network Rail, and secure UK government backing to proceed with planned stations and upgrades through the 2020s and into the 2040s.
4/5 Britain's creaking transport infrastructure, plus retrospective on '25 and predictions for '26
Q: How do we have to deal with the issues surrounding aging infrastructure?
We need to spend more on maintenance and renewal while focusing on spending money wisely to maximize efficiency.
