  • Bulk Loads Podcast

I’m a farmer that has some trucks too. I move anywhere from 20-50 loads a week with most of it being livestock feed. The bulkloads podcast has helped me pass time while checking cattle on the farm while also giving me ideas to improve my business.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

BLP 369: 1 Gas Station to 1,400 Employees: How Wallis Built a Fuel Empire
Q: What makes Wallis's approach to driver safety and home time stand out in the industry?
Safety is a core value; they aggressively review near-miss footage, use cameras, and emphasize getting drivers home daily, with leadership repeatedly highlighting drivers' decisions and dedication as central to the company's success.
BLP 369: 1 Gas Station to 1,400 Employees: How Wallis Built a Fuel Empire
Q: How did Wallis grow from a single gas station to a large multifaceted operation?
From starting with a gas station in 1968 to expanding into convenience stores with fuel, acquiring sites, building relationships with families who sold to Wallis, and later diversifying into lubricants, car washes, and a logistics network, all guided by a strong legacy and customer-first philosophy.
BLP 365: For This Business, Success isn't Measured in Trucks
Q: What would be your advice to someone watching this who's starting out or trying to be better at it?
Seek mentorship from experienced operators who have a proven track record and build strong relationships with reliable brokers; the first two years involve paying your dues and learning from the bad experiences to reach the good ones.
BLP 360: How One Truck Puts $50,000 in Your Pocket Every Year
Q: How did you finance the initial fleet growth and what role did depreciation and tax strategy play?
I used a combination of personal funds and a partner investment, and accelerated depreciation (bonus depreciation) allowed us to economically justify buying five to six hundred thousand dollars worth of equipment in a year while reducing taxable income, which helped us reinvest and grow fuelly while managing cash flow.
BLP 360: How One Truck Puts $50,000 in Your Pocket Every Year
Q: Can you explain the math behind the $50,000 per truck potential and how you arrived at that goal?
The $50,000 figure comes from aligning per-truck revenue with operating costs, ensuring after-driver pay, fuel, and other expenses there's a healthy gross profit target. It also involves evaluating whether upgrading equipment or adding a truck yields a better ROI, with the driver's miles and loads factored into the annual profitability goal.
