  • Great Guests, Distracting Host

    The host keeps

    - going off topic

    - interrupting the guests

    - rambling without coherent thought

    - asking terrible questions like “do you think your field (and life’s work) is a pseudoscience? I mean that’s an insult… more rambling”

The guests are great and try to bring the host back on topic in order to teach the listeners something valuable. I wish the host would let the guests shine instead of pulling the conversation into unprepared ramblings.

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

BI 219 Xaq Pitkow: Principles and Constraints of Cognition
Q: Where did I go wrong and how would you correct me?
That's a great start. That's a major theme of what we're working on in the lab.
BI 217 Jennifer Prendki: Consciousness, Life, AI, and Quantum Physics
Q: Is consciousness necessary for AI entities if we want them to play nice with us?
Jennifer Prendki discusses the need for AI to be inspired by biological processes and consciousness to innovate and enhance AI.
BI 210 Dean Buonomano: Consciousness, Time, and Organotypic Dynamics
Q: As you discussed Integrated Information Theory, what are your critiques of its scientific validity?
Buonomano argues that IIT lacks integration with existing laws of physics and relies on constructs that are not empirically testable.
BI 203 David Krakauer: How To Think Like a Complexity Scientist
Q: What is the relationship between the technologies of knowledge and methodologies and the ontology, the domain of inquiry?
They are deeply entangled and that understanding where all this started is essential.
BI 177 Special: Bernstein Workshop Panel
Q: How can machine learning be improved to help generate insights and theories?
Panelists discussed the need for more multimodal models and better incorporation of biological processes into machine learning approaches.
