Migration is a complex phenomenon – for individuals, it is a personal journey that can result in struggle or triumph depending on life circumstances; and for countries, it can be an economic driver, or a source of social tension or even conflict.

  • Great episode on foreign students in China

Am now teaching at a Chinese university for a semester and interacting with students from my home country a lot. I really enjoyed the episode about foreign students in China. It was balanced and gave an accurate picture of what I’m observing.

Looking at the subjects in the other episodes, I’m subscribing. I like the fact that they approach migration as a global phenomenon and are not looking at it as something affecting only their own country like so many commentators in rich Western countries ... more

  • Love the show! It sparks a lot of ideas

I love this first episode. It gives me a lot of ideas about what I would love to hear next.

It would be great to listen to an episode with representatives from NGOs assisting migrants in distress at the border. Also, can we hear from people who run migrant shelters in Mexico? How about journalists and researchers focused on movement through the Darien Gap? Given the salience of Cuban and Haitian migration, can we hear some discussion of how these populations consider land or maritime migration?... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Nina Glick Schiller on transnationalism, feat. Karina Quintanilha
Q: Why is the nation-state framing still so persistent, and how does transnationalism offer a different lens?
Both guests explain that state-centric models obscure multi-scalar networks of power and that transnationalism reveals how regimes of mobility, capital flows, and social relations across borders shape migrant lives more accurately than traditional integration narratives.
Nina Glick Schiller on transnationalism, feat. Karina Quintanilha
Q: Can you take us back to those days and walk us through what you were thinking at the time?
Nina describes the collaborative origins of transnationalism, the push to challenge the dominant migration paradigm, and how early teamwork with colleagues around the Caribbean and Philippines helped seed a broader rethinking of how migrants move and connect across borders.
Gracia Liu-Farrer on the social construction of skill, feat. Helena Hof
Q: What surprised you most about how labels of skilled or unskilled get assigned in practice?
She highlights that labeling is influenced by power dynamics, immigration regimes, and local labor market demands, not just by a person's actual abilities.
Gracia Liu-Farrer on the social construction of skill, feat. Helena Hof
Q: Gracia, you've spent years studying how migrants navigate labor markets across different countries. What first made you question the idea that skill is something objective or universally recognized?
Her own experiences across China and Japan showed that skills vary by context and are often negated or transformed when moving to a new labor market; she emphasizes that credentialed positions may not translate across borders, making skill a contested, negotiated concept.
Unpacking Canada's Strong Borders Act: What Bill C-2 Means for Refugees in Canada
Q: Claire, can you explain how this time restriction could impact refugees?
Claire explains that the one-year deadline penalizes those whose situations in their home countries change after being in Canada, complicating their ability to seek protection.

The show centers on migration as a complex, globally interconnected phenomenon.
