  • Great podcast

Really good podcast, which usually helps me decide whether or not to buy a book on music.

Eric used to do another podcast which I really loved where he would breakdown a bands history, very insightful and good production values. Miss that!

Senich is a true music connoisseur and brings you from one end of the spectrum to another with bands such as Sisters of Mercy to Led Zeppelin, to The Doors, to Tom Petty, to KISS, to The Cure, and to his near and near Eddie Van Halen. [EP 386] The Clash: Triumph or Tragedy? - The Real Story Behind the Band - With Pat Gilbert
Q: Did each member remember The Clash in different ways?
Gilbert confirms that each member remembered the band with seriousness and unique experiences, though all recognized the group's message and shared pride in their political edge, providing a cohesive but multifaceted memory of the band.
[HIGHLIGHT] Black Sabbath After Ozzy: Did Dio Save the Band? - From EP 384
Q: Chris, when did you discover Ronnie James Dio, that era of Black Sabbath? And how did you feel about it in terms of him being a replacement for Ozzy?
Chris Sutton explains discovering Dio through Rainbow and situates Dio as a pivotal, controversial but essential shift for Sabbath, arguing that Dio's presence helped redefine the band's direction while raising debate about branding and the group's identity.
[EP 384] Black Sabbath’s Dio Era: The Albums, Songs & Legacy - With Chris Sutton
Q: By the time Dehumanizer was released, how did the Dio era influence the band's sound, and why was the singer situation so fluid during that period?
Dehumanizer demonstrated that Dio-era sensibilities could still shape Sabbath's riffs, with Iommi's crunch returning and Dio's melodic instincts still influential, even as the band navigated lineup flux and debates about who should sing on which projects, highlighting the ongoing tension between identity and experimentation.
[EP 384] Black Sabbath’s Dio Era: The Albums, Songs & Legacy - With Chris Sutton
Q: What was the turning point that made it clear Dio-era could be a lasting and defining chapter for Sabbath, beyond just a temporary replacement?
Once Dio started jamming with the core members and their chemistry clicked, it became evident they had a unique synergy. Dio brought lyrical and melodic elements that complemented Iommi's guitar work, yielding a cohesive sound that felt both fresh and true to Sabbath's essence.
[EP 384] Black Sabbath’s Dio Era: The Albums, Songs & Legacy - With Chris Sutton
Q: In the book, you detail that burnout that was happening with Sabbath before Ozzy left. What happened, and what does your perspective say about the decision to bring in Dio?
The burnout and internal pressures were intense, with financial strains and personal problems pushing the band toward instability; Dio's arrival was seen as a way to sustain the band's momentum, and the production and lineup changes ultimately helped revive Sabbath, aligning more with the band's strengths while opening a new musical direction.
