  • Middling Board Games News Show

First off, the host Stephen is obnoxious and self-righteous. Daddy clearly didn’t stroke his ego enough as a child as he’s always listing the events where he’ll be the honored speaker, he rests on the laurels of his accomplishments at Stronghold, and makes sure to remind you of all of his travels (I guess so we know he has some money?). He loves talking about his Corvette here and there whilst speaking out about the false narrative of climate change. He just can’t even cope with tariffs because... more

  • Not nearly as good as it used to be

The only real insider (Ignacy) is rarely there now, and it’s just the other two guys with board game connections calling themselves “insiders.” It mostly is self promotion of their two reputations, and you can get just as much information subscribing to board game article newsfeeds.

I listened for years and enjoyed the conversations, but now it’s two guys taking about their travels and board games they played, their social media names (which is 10% of the runtime), plus additional self promoti... more

  • Final crossed over and sold out

They sold out to BGG. Buyer beware here! And the last year the quality has really taper off and unfortunetly downward. It was one of my favorite podcasts but the new format is so disjointed and choppy. End of an era sadly.

    It was a good run.

  • Have a conversation with these board game insiders

I started listening in 2023 and while other board game related podcasts have come and gone from my playlist, this one is a keeper. This show features discussions of board game business news, and discussions of relevant questions to and from the BGG guild for the show. Thanks to the vast industry experience of Stephen, Ignacy, and Corey, they all have excellent insight and information on the board game industry. Each show feels “conversational” and after listening to each, I feel like I was part ... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

BGI 428 The One About Being Old
Q: What is the most unique mechanism you have seen in a published game?
The panel highlights several standout mechanisms, including Lark Lamp's three-dimensional lantern-based boards, an ice-cube race mechanic from Ice Cube, and most notably Behind, which combines deduction and puzzle-building to create an object you assemble without knowing the final image beforehand; responses emphasize innovation across multiple games and a willingness to see ideas explored in diverse regions and publishers.
BGI 430 The One about Coziness
Q: What Gen Con games are you most looking forward to?
They discuss The Crew 3, Lord of the Rings Circle of Conflict, Abroad, and WeFolk/Impressed by Play2Z as titles they are excited to see or demos they plan to check out.
BGI 429 The One Before Gencon
Q: At what point does a board game truly feel like it belongs to you and becomes part of your collection?
Listeners and hosts discuss multiple milestones such as owning the physical box, initial unboxing, and early play, with a common thread that meaningful ownership often solidifies after the first gameplay or after the game has been catalogued and shelved in a personal library.
BGI 426 The One About Your Most Prized Game Component
Q: Does the size or packaging of a game reliably indicate its complexity or price?
There is a correlation, but not absolute. Some large-box games are relatively light in gameplay, while some small boxes carry heavy complexity; pricing tends to reflect production scale and perceived value rather than complexity alone.
BGI 426 The One About Your Most Prized Game Component
Q: Can other publishers pick up the unpublished games when a publisher collapses or changes direction?
Yes. When a publisher goes under or there's a split in ideology, the rights to a game can be acquired by another publisher, though the cost and process depend on contracts and ownership of art and assets.
