This is the story of a mass-murder that divided a nation - a story that began in a rickety old home on a cold June morning in 1994, where five members of a seemingly ordinary New Zealand family were gunned down. There were two suspects. One lay dead from a single bullet to the head. The other was the only survivor: David Bain. Since then the country has asked: who killed the Bain family? David or ... more

The presentation of the case was thorough and clear. I thought MvB did a really good job at presenting the evidence in a balanced way (while still being upfront and clear about his own opinion which is rationalised on the evidence presented). Side note: it’s interesting that both Robin’s brother and Margaret’s sister are upset that David has allowed these allegations to be perpetuated about Robin- seems like they also agree with MvB.
This was hard to listen to, hearing all the things people said about them. My mum was her cousin was actually there the day before the murders a cured. I was 16 at the time and mum was ment yo stay there the night but had to come home cause I needed her. To this day I thank my lucky stars she never stayed. But she knew along with our whole family David did it. Margaret told mum the day before she was scared of him. And before the media released who was killed mum knew it was them and David did i... more
Science tells us that the father could not have committed these horrendous murders and then himself, who would clean and change his clothes before doing himself? And hello the house was a hoarders delight, he really went and put his dirty clothes in the basket to be washed by his one remaining child?
It’s disturbing that people have believed David’s lies enough to let him walk free, how can they explain that if he does this again?
A very thorough analysis of all the evidence. Now I understand why my parents were so sure at the time that David murdered his family. The only question it left me with is what was the jury on the second trial thinking?!
I came to this podcast after listening to both seasons of The Trial by Stuff, which were excellent and provided very balanced reporting on the cases at hand. This earlier podcast, however, is surprisingly biased against David, and the host often jumps to conclusions that I absolutely disagree with (as a reasonable and completely uninvested person). It’s disappointing because I always prefer to receive an impartial and balanced portrayal of events, without the podcaster weighing in with their per... more
