What an informative, straightforward , clear podcast! Just what I was looking for. The calm clarity, all without the distracting, annoying jangly music, giggling and attempts to be “amusing”. The use of a variety of recordings and repetitive, clearly named species is a marvel. I learned birding by ear decades ago and now have the time (and indispensable hearing aids) to relearn and prepare for listening in the field. Thank you for this amazing gift!
This is such a gift! I’ve done a decent amount of learning birdsong myself, but the insights provided by this podcast are super useful. It’s well-produced and the content is thorough. Even when the featured birds aren’t in my area (Florida) I can hear commonalities and differences with the species that we do have here. That also helps to build a bigger birdsong vocabulary and better notice similarities within bird families. The effort put into this podcast is noticeable and undeniable. Thank you... more
I’ve been looking for a good podcast with a solid introduction to ear birding for some of my beginner birding friends and this is the first one I’ve found that really works. Beth starts out with Nathan’s Pieplow’s description of sounds that help establish a common language to what we’re hearing. She groups similar sounds birds or bird families together in a way that makes sense. My personal favorite is that she employs a variety of ways to help remember individual birds.
These recordings generally have copyright attached to the recordists. Most xeno canto recordings do not allow for uncredited republishing in this context. Would like to see future episodes at least credit recordings (unless of course you’ve managed to assemble this incredible collection of recordings yourself).
I am a visual learner, very much struggle with auditory learning. Thanks to Beth I am finally starting to get a small handle on birding by ear, and I’m getting a little better with each episode!
