  • Listener questions

I listen to and love every episode of this podcast. My favourites are the ones that answer listener questions. I especially like the “Do birds have feelings” episode. As a scientist that has always felt that birds and all animals have feelings but kept getting told that isn’t very scientific of me, I felt so seen hearing your stores of birds showing emotions. I cried tears of joy during this episode. Thank you so much!

  • Kinglets episode

Just listened to your Kinglet’s episode from back in March. Great, timely episode for us getting out there this spring for some peak birding activity. Your expert was very helpful with the identifying features and I look forward to being able to better identify these little nuggets from now on.

  • Great show about us!

Great show about what’s going on in our own backyards, literally! 🇨🇦 Wondering if maybe you guys could take the interviews outside, maybe like taking us along for a chat while on a walk? I think it the sound of the great Canadian outdoors (or fireplace cabin sounds in winter) could make a great addition to the bird convos! Thanks again for the great podcast! ✌️

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Do field guides still matter? The latest guide to the birds of Alberta
Q: Who benefited from the book's proceeds and what was the motivation?
Proceeds go to Birds Canada, reflecting a commitment to conservation and outreach, with the authors framing the project as both a celebration of Alberta's birds and a way to support ongoing protection efforts.
Do field guides still matter? The latest guide to the birds of Alberta
Q: What were the biggest changes since the last Alberta field guide and why start anew?
Significant taxonomic updates, new species ranges, and the need to reflect shifting populations made a fresh start more practical than updating an older edition, plus copyright considerations favored a new start.
Do field guides still matter? The latest guide to the birds of Alberta
Q: Why do field guides matter in the age of Merlin and digital apps?
Field guides remain complementary; they provide a portable, tactile reference with region-specific detail, including local discovery tips and a curated focus that a broad app cannot match, especially for Alberta's habitats and seasonal patterns.
The Wake-up Call: Louisiana Waterthrush and Acadian Flycatcher
Q: Do you have a favorite moment from the field with this bird?
The most memorable moments come from that first song or chip note of the season, when you realize the birds are back, paired up, and defending territories—it's a vivid sign of spring and a glimpse of successful breeding ahead.
The Secrets of Bird Nests with Mark Peck
Q: First, which species in Canada lays the most eggs versus the least eggs?
Waterfowl can lay many eggs, while some shorebirds and passerines like kinglets may lay relatively few; overall strategies vary, with some species laying only two eggs and others, like kinglets, laying many to offset high predation or short lifespans.
