  • First Timer

I just listened to the podcast of the Gray Headed Chickadee. I’m new to birding, about a month. Went on vacation and just stayed local. Went to Cape May NJ which is less than an hour from my home and my wife and I explored the area and took a habitat tour which talked all about birds. Very interesting and relaxing. My first bird to ID was the Sanderling. Became an ABA member to learn more. Then ran into this podcast from the ABA website. One can learn a lot listening to podcasts I believe. You k... more

  • Volume variation is hard for headphones! Love the show though

I love listening to this podcast but I often find myself turning it off because sometimes the audio is super quiet and then it immediately gets super loud, so when I listen in my earbuds it kinda hurts.

  • Bird in my area after fire

During the fire Buckhannon 2022 I think here in Western part of Virginia. The smoke was heavy here in Lexington even but as I watched, there must’ve been 25 or 30 new birds in my yard. What I noticed first was 8 to 10 woodpeckers which was an unusual site. also noticed a reduction of hummingbirds the following year.

  • Appreciate focus on conservation

It's a tough world out there for birds. Kudos to Nate for his efforts to educate and inspire. Like it or not, human activities do impact birds, and I appreciate this podcast for giving listeners context for understanding what birds are where, and why. I learn something important from each episode. Keep up the good work!!!

  • Just too political these days.

This used to be my go to birding podcast, but in the past year or two it has taken a turn for the worse. The podcast host has decent segments and excellent guests, but he projects a snarky attitude that makes my eyes roll on most occasions. It’s also unfortunate that he blasts and ridicules other negative podcast reviews on various social media outlets. That doesn’t seem professional for the ABA. I hope the show improves. There’s not exactly a plethora of birding podcasts to choose from, so unti... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

09-38: A Dirtbag Big Year with Owen Reiser
Q: Did you learn anything from them as you were doing it?
It's incredible the drive some birders have; they push beyond the grind to achieve their goals, which is admirable.
09-36: Where Have the Gray-headed Chickadees Gone with Brad Meiklejohn
Q: What has changed, obviously a lot, but what specifically has changed in these places with regards to changing climate, changing weather?
Alaska is experiencing drastic changes due to climate change, including shrinking glaciers, warming rivers, and effects on ecosystems such as increased bushification and altered animal migration patterns.
09-36: Where Have the Gray-headed Chickadees Gone with Brad Meiklejohn
Q: What is the habitat like where you find these birds? What makes it different from the surrounding places?
They are found at or near the limit of the spruce forest in isolated copses of poplar trees among vast expanses of tundra, which makes their habitat distinct but challenging to access.
09-36: Where Have the Gray-headed Chickadees Gone with Brad Meiklejohn
Q: What is the deal with gray-headed chickadee? What makes it so unique among the continent's bird life?
The gray-headed chickadee is unique because it occurs on both sides of the pond and is the only member of the Tit family that does so. Its remote habitat and sedentary nature make it particularly vulnerable now as its population has declined dramatically in recent years.
09-33: Why Birders Go Where They Go with Natalia Ocamp-Peñuela & Scott Winton
Q: How did you set up this sort of experiment? How did you answer this question?
They utilized eBird data, which includes unique identifiers for birders, allowing them to analyze bird watchers' travel behaviors without needing personal data about individual users.
