  • Great find

Really liking this podcast so far. I found it after looking for more content from Heather McCargo. Would love it if some of the episodes on native plants went into more detail on how to help birds specifically with native plants and trees, and also a titled episode for beginners on how to attract more birds to your yard and create habitats for them.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Leave The Leaves! With David Mizejewski
Q: Can you give listeners a simple starting point for who have always bagged their leaves and sent them to the landfill?
Commit to a small, actionable step like pledging to leave as many leaves as possible on your property and progressively incorporating them into garden beds, while monitoring plant health and adjusting as needed.
BIRD HUGGER CLASSIC: The Elusive Nighthawk With Phil Brown
Q: Now, can you tell our listeners about the Nighthawk Monitoring Initiative? What is actually involved? What are your goals?
The initiative launched a pilot season to study Nighthawk migration, using a fixed count location, teams of volunteers, and professional biologists to tally birds, document timing, direction, and flock sizes, with goals to establish baselines and inform conservation actions.
Saving Our Soils With Louis De Jaeger
Q: How do the historical examples like the Dust Bowl and ancient civilizations inform our current approach to soil?
Louie highlights that soil mismanagement has led to societal decline in history, but contrasts with hopeful modern stories of communities taking action; learning from these lessons motivates practical, scalable actions rather than doom-and-gloom, emphasizing resilience through soil stewardship.
Saving Our Soils With Louis De Jaeger
Q: What can the average listener do today to improve soil in their own yard?
The guest advocates reducing or eliminating pesticides, planting trees and edible perennials, leaving leaves to decompose, using mulch, and creating a small food forest to provide ongoing benefits for soil life, plants, and birds.
Saving Our Soils With Louis De Jaeger
Q: Could you elaborate on the idea that healthy soil is more than just avoiding fertilizers and that it relies on soil life?
Louie explains that healthy soil hosts a diverse community of microorganisms and fungi; NPK fertilizers provide fast food to plants but deprive soil life, whereas a thriving soil ecosystem stores water, supports nutrient cycles, and keeps plants resilient; keeping soil covered and feeding soil life with organic matter is essential.
