  • Let down

Big Woods Bucks got me into podcasts. I listened on their website before I even had a podcast app. I listened to all the episodes multiple times each. I sure do miss the old “round table” talk. I understand completely that sponsorships pay the bills. In my own personal opinion and the reason for the loss of my “fanship” or following/respecting the “crew” is due to my feeling of selling your soul to the devil (click on this/like this video). Sure do miss the way it used to be. Again my own person... more

  • Western applications too

Even though I only live in the West where there are mule deer, definitely some information that applies to how we hunt out here. Great to have you guys putting out all the tracking and still-hunting info that you do. Keep it up.

  • They need to get some new talent on there

You can only listen to Hal say how smart he is so many times. It seems like all the good deer hunter just left the crew.

  • Love these legends!

Hal and Joe and Rick are some of the greatest guys I’ve ever listened to and the most knowledgeable Whitetail deer hunters in the northeast and probably ever, very fortunate to be able to listen to them and pick up their tips and tricks of how they harvest deer in the woods. It has certainly helped me become a better deer hunter and tracker. I’ve been able to successfully harvest mature Bucks due to some of their advice very soothing to listen too, and I enjoy them very much. PS, I miss bad Lee... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Adirondack Hunt Podcast Ep. 14: How the Indians Hunted the Adirondacks with Dr. Bob Kuhn
Q: When did the Mohawk start using bows and arrows, and what evidence supports this shift in hunting technology?
Projectile points shift from larger, equilateral triangular forms to smaller, curved, isosceles shapes around 1350 AD, indicating a functional change likely tied to bow use; later, around the end of the 16th century, a return to a simpler equilateral but smaller point corresponds with fur trade and hunting broader game; the archaeologist ties these changes to practical hunting needs and technology development.
The Adirondack Hunt Podcast Ep. 14: How the Indians Hunted the Adirondacks with Dr. Bob Kuhn
Q: So fundamentally, in the article, I always wondered how the Mohawk and the various Indian tribes would go. Why would they go to the Adirondacks, where I believe for us, it's more difficult to shoot a deer in the Adirondacks than it is down in the fertile valleys? Why would they go there?
The guest explains that deer densities in settled Mohawk valleys might be lower due to heavy human presence, while the Adirondacks were less inhabited, offering higher deer densities and larger hunting opportunities despite the terrain; seasonal movement and strategic resource availability drove these patterns.
Shooting Skills, Blind Setups, Embarrassing Stories and More! | Big Woods Bucks Podcast Ep 188
Q: How does one practice and prepare for Big Woods shooting?
Practice shooting while moving, develop muscle memory for getting your gun up and safety off, and use balloons for target practice.
Full Circle | Through the Eyes of a Maine Guide Ep 17 with Steve Schaefer
Q: What advice would you give someone starting out who wants to guide for a living?
You either have the passion and calling to be a guide, or you don't. It has to be something that comes from within.
Full Circle | Through the Eyes of a Maine Guide Ep 17 with Steve Schaefer
Q: So have you seen a change, which I'm sure you have?
The age structure and family groups have changed over time, depending on the time of year and the type of clients that come to Grand Lake Stream.
