  • Exceptional

This has been one of the most informative podcasts I could find on filmmaking. I appreciate the deep dive into practical effects (miniatures, forced perspective, etc) as much as the VFX.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The old-school show-within-a-show in 'Wonder Man' used some old-school effects techniques
Q: How did you handle the kitchen island destruction sequence to make it feel impactful but controlled?
We designed rigs with the special effects team, used high-speed filming to capture the moment, then replaced or augmented certain elements in CG to choreograph the energy ripple through the countertop and surrounding space.
The old-school show-within-a-show in 'Wonder Man' used some old-school effects techniques
Q: Can you talk about the conversations around the style and look of Simon's powers?
We aimed for a subtle, in-camera approach that would let the powers feel physical and grounded, with gradual escalation and environment interaction rather than obvious magical effects, and then augmented them in post as needed.
The art of CG ping pong balls and crowds in 'Marty Supreme'
Q: Tell me about the choreography on set.
A specialized table-tennis coach helped design each rally, teaching players with mirrored timing and spins, so every hit had a defined motion. The team then evaluated takes to decide when a take without a ball would work, ensuring the action matched the eventual CG ball timing and camera angles.
ILM's Ben Morris reflects on 'The Last Jedi' and 'ABBA Voyage'
Q: Last Jedi, I suppose, is one that sticks in my mind. I'm curious, going into that, what did you think were the big hurdles for ILM, even though, of course, ILM had done so much Star Wars?
The big hurdles were preserving a nostalgic Star Wars look while allowing new director-driven aesthetics, managing complex space battles with a blend of practical effects and digital innovations, and coordinating a large, multi-studio team to deliver a cohesive, tangible feel.
ILM's Rachel Rose on the R&D side of visual effects
Q: What big problem did ILM aim to solve with Block Party and how did it come about?
She explains Block Party was developed to simplify and automate rigging work so artists could focus on art rather than the technical drudgery, combining a visual rigging canvas with a system that supports reusable and adaptable rigs across different characters.
