"You asked me once," said O'Brien, "what was in Room 101. I told you that you knew the answer already. Everyone knows it. The thing that is in Room 101 is the worst thing in the world."

RJ Bayley’s nuanced performance as the Narrator of The War of The World’s conveys a balance between the past-tense reflections of the narrative and the tension and mounting fear of the story as it plays out.
The text itself is remarkable for many reasons. It combined invasion literature with science fiction to astounding effect and the prose is completely accessible to a modern audience aside from a few changes in the etymology in the intervening century.

Ok, so despite having a bizarre fear of aliens, I also have an equally odd fascination with them, both fictionally and ‘factually’. This had led me to devour almost all iterations of the War of the Worlds story (TV, film, musicals, etc). However, I never got round to the actual source material itself. Until now.
I’ve been familiar with RJ Bayley’s work on both radio and audiobooks (special mention to his exquisite work on the two short stories titled ‘Water for Drowning’ written Ray Cluley, che... more
I love The War of the Worlds. I've loved various incarnations of TWotW, sometimes guzzling them down repeatedly. This, for me, is becoming my favourite version of one of my favourite stories. I read a lot and, in recent years, I've tried to have a couple of books and a couple of audiobooks on the go at any one time, so I can choose whichever suits my mood whenever I have some 'down time.' While I've been working my way through these 'episodes,' I haven't really found the need to have anything el... more
I’ve listened to war of the worlds quite a few times, but Bayley’s delivery is the best I’ve heard. I just HAD to rewind a few times to hear him say ‘Nathaniel!’ again tbh. Needless to say, the clue is in the title, I’m looking forward to the next instalment!
I think it’s safe to say most people regard War of the Worlds as a classic story, with so many readings and interpretations from movies to a rock opera available it’s hard to think that there would be anything new left to do with it. RJ Bayley’s measured yet passionate reading breathes new life into a story over 100 years old. In a library of high concept, bombastic adaptions RJ Bayley’s reading brings the story back to it’s core; evoking mounting tension, dread and horror harkening back to that... more
