  • Fintechs

Although you are speaking from one specific lens, many Fintechs rely on community banks for their valuable charter. Fintech’s as a partner can be an asset and an income opportunity for community banks if they wanted to be a sponsor bank for a Fintech. I’m not sure I agree that Fintechs as a whole are a threat, they can be leveraged as an advantage and opportunity for traditional banks.

Peter Stenehjem on Leadership, Legacy, and FIBT's Future | BankTalk Episode 130
Q: What makes FIBT distinctive in the mineral land and oil-and-gas space?
The bank combines oil and gas attorneys, petroleum engineers, and a mineral-tracking tech platform (Mineral Tracker) with a banking services footprint, enabling reserves-based lending, easement negotiations, and minerals management across many jurisdictions.
Peter Stenehjem on Leadership, Legacy, and FIBT's Future | BankTalk Episode 130
Q: You've taken over as CEO this past year. What were the key challenges in that transition?
Peter describes a deliberate three-year transition, the use of a third-party advisor for family succession planning, and keeping the privately held, family-owned culture intact while expanding strategically through acquisitions and new markets.
Why Mutuals Matter | BankTalk Episode 123
Q: What is the Mutuals Matter campaign and how does it tie into your work?
Mutuals Matter is a collaborative marketing initiative led by a consortium of mutual banks to explain what mutual banks are and why they differ from stock banks and credit unions. It provides shared marketing materials and a national narrative to raise awareness, educate customers, and illustrate the community-focused value of mutual banks. This helps drive customer understanding and trust at scale, aligning with the banks' mission and local outreach goals.
Why Mutuals Matter | BankTalk Episode 123
Q: Can you explain the advantages of the Shared Service Model and how it helps mutuals scale?
The shared service model centralizes back-office functions like IT, HR, operations, and finance across the three banks, enabling them to achieve economies of scale, attract talent, and access advanced technology while preserving local ownership and board oversight. This structure reduces duplicative costs, allows larger-scale technology deployments, and frees front-line teams to focus on community engagement and growth. It also supports better vendor negotiation and standardization across the entire holding company, creating a more cohesive and resilient operating environment.
Financial Literacy – Growing Popularity of Financial Education | BankTalk Episode 128
Q: What impact have you seen on students, parents, and the broader community?
Students gain hands-on financial literacy, often engaging families at home, leading to conversations about budgeting, credit, and opening accounts, and sometimes driving shifts in student outcomes and local banking relationships.
