Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

367 - Jeff Van Remortel - Northern Wisconsin Forecast
Q: What should an average muskies angler start looking for this weekend?
Focus on warm-up trends, look for active post-spawn or late-spawn fish in rivers and current areas, and target back bays and weed edges as water temperatures rise into the 50s and low 60s. Be prepared to adapt lure choices—from gliders and Magnum jerkbaits to pit bulls and other littlerbait options—as fish activity shifts with the warming trend.
366 - Kyle Friedges - Beyond the 8: Musky Stories, Tech, and the Thrill of the Chase
Q: What's your take on content creation and merch as part of a musky-focused business?
He explains the realities of producing long-form content, the effort behind editing and gear setup, and how merch has been a challenge due to supply issues and family matters, yet remains a potential growth area with the right partner.
366 - Kyle Friedges - Beyond the 8: Musky Stories, Tech, and the Thrill of the Chase
Q: What impact has technology had on musky fishing while still preserving the mystique of the sport?
Kyle discusses how spot lock, mapping, and electronics have transformed technique and navigation, but he believes the challenge and mystery of identifying spots and understanding fish behavior still keeps the sport engaging for some, while others chase newer tech.
364 - Lee Tauchen - Bait Junkies, Big Fish & Today's Angler
Q: How did you get involved with Today's Angler and Lee Lures, and what was your path to building baits?
Lee started with a humble woodworking effort during winter '98, turning a curtain rod into a lure, which caught a fish on its first cast, launching a career in lure design and guiding that bridged TV, YouTube, and expos; collaborations with Carrie and others amplified the reach.
364 - Lee Tauchen - Bait Junkies, Big Fish & Today's Angler
Q: What early-season baits or tactics do you recommend for opening weekend in Wisconsin?
Focus on warmer water pockets driven by prevailing winds, with smaller baits early-season in Wisconsin; balance between speed of retrieve and size depending on fish mood, and be ready to switch between bucktails and smaller minnow-type baits as conditions dictate.
