  • Somebody silence this man

Host Ryan McQuade is an embarrassment to film criticism and makes this show unlistenable. The way he cusses and bullies filmmakers and actors on mic is disgusting and deeply unprofessional. He talks over all of the other panelists and won’t let them finish their thoughts. When they do manage to say something, he immediately attacks and belittles them. And there’s no need to call out other podcasters or critics. We just want to hear everybody else talk about movies.

  • Director Watch

Erik, Jay, Sophia, Josh etc.. I salute you! Your "voice" comes off as authentic, cordial, and mature.

Whereas, Ryan. Oh Ryan. We can hear the emphysema in every podcast. Your faux cocky attitude and presentation discredits every insight you claim. A motormouth with nothing to say. You're the weak link in this ensemble.

  • Great podcast overall but hard to hear

The title says it all - love this podcast but it’s sometimes physically hard to hear a couple of you speak. Sophia and Josh are great, I can always hear them very clearly.

  • The Best Podcast for Cinephiles

Besides the fact that the hosts of this podcast are incredibly funny and insightful, what I love the most about it is that the hosts offer their uncompromising views on films honestly, without succumbing to the Letterboxd mob chorus or the critical consensus. Also, their Director Watch series is incredible - Ryan and Jay and Sophia are amazing and hilarious hosts.

  • Use. Your. Microphone!

I normally like the larger panels and the more historical podcasts. The Best Actress tier episodes could be great but Ryan insists on talking low and mumbling. He makes the episode almost unlistenable. Why do you have a microphone if you don’t use it? Respect your guests and your audience!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Director Watch Podcast Ep. 132 - 'Heaven Can Wait' (Warren Beatty, 1978)
Q: How does this movie connect to the broader theme of relationships in Beatty's work?
The film explores Beatty's infamous romantic persona and how that aspect influences his character's journey, underlying the comedic situations throughout the movie.
Interview: Rian Johnson on How Faith and Humanity Make Peace Within His Latest Mystery 'Wake Up Dead Man'
Q: Can you talk a little bit about your collaboration with Josh on this one?
When you have an actor like Josh, it makes your job very, very easy. I just convinced he can do anything. But he also came into this role with so much enthusiasm and such a generous spirit.
Interview: Rian Johnson on How Faith and Humanity Make Peace Within His Latest Mystery 'Wake Up Dead Man'
Q: Could you talk a little bit about the battle between these two and ultimately the approach of what Father Judd has to face in terms of just the way the message is being preached to him and to the congregation?
Part of the reason I felt comfortable delving into all this stuff is just because it's personal to me and it's stuff that I have both sides inside me.
Director Watch Podcast Ep. 127 - 'Beau Travail' (Claire Denis, 1999)
Q: What did the other webs create based on her work?
There were a lot of discoveries I think early on for us for independent cinema. She is one of those.
Director Watch Podcast Ep. 127 - 'Beau Travail' (Claire Denis, 1999)
Q: What do you think of Claire Denis as a filmmaker?
She is one of those funny French stodgy, kind of filmmakers, which is fun. I actually like that.
