  • 40 is old??

Not a serious podcast - they are shockingly unaware of their implicit racial bias.

  • Relentlessly Annoying

As an awards nut I listen to tons of awards podcasts in my free time. This one was suggested to me by the algorithm so I thought I’d give it a try. I don’t think I’ve heard pundits as obnoxious and relentlessly annoying as Ryan McQuade and Eric Anderson. I checked them out on twitter and they are just as terrible there as well. Also they need to check that they are consistently talking into their mics properly because the sound quality is terribly inconsistent. I gave the show to episodes, but ... more

  • Director Watch

The ensemble is very listenable and one of my favorites. All of the cohosts are solid and endearing and come off as genuinely good critics.

Be that as it may, Ryan M continues to embarrass himself week after week. The best episodes are the ones he isn’t hosting. He’s crass and unfunny in the most basic sense.

Yikes. The snark is eye rolling and exhausting at this point.

Way to go Erik and everyone else on the team.

  • Should be a 5 star review

This would be a 5* review if it wasn’t for the fact that Ryan takes up 80% of the total airtime (the reason why Director Watch part of this pod is completely unlistenable). The recent episode where Sophia hosted was so much more professional and pleasant.

Everything else about this podcast is superb, and I enjoy listening despite the fact that Ryan talks over every guest.

  • Somebody silence this man

Host Ryan McQuade is an embarrassment to film criticism and makes this show unlistenable. The way he cusses and bullies filmmakers and actors on mic is disgusting and deeply unprofessional. He talks over all of the other panelists and won’t let them finish their thoughts. When they do manage to say something, he immediately attacks and belittles them. And there’s no need to call out other podcasters or critics. We just want to hear everybody else talk about movies.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Interview: Shawn Hatosy on Directing 'The Pitt,' Camera Choreography, and Being Online
Q: What role did JoJo play in shaping the camera choreography and master shots?
JoJo is an incredible asset; we use a master approach that covers about 70% of a scene, with JoJo guiding movement and the camera's path to capture the action and emotion in one fluid movement.
Interview: Shawn Hatosy on Directing 'The Pitt,' Camera Choreography, and Being Online
Q: How did blocking change for the first minutes with so many speaking roles, given the episode picks up right after episode eight?
Blocking had to be adaptable; I watched the prior day's dailies to understand where everyone stood, then adjusted on set with a lot of on-the-fly coordination to keep 20 characters readable in real time.
Interview: Shawn Hatosy on Directing 'The Pitt,' Camera Choreography, and Being Online
Q: What was the preparation like after you found out you'd be directing, up until you got on set?
There was a months-long lead time with careful pre-production, watching cuts from previous episodes, and a focus on memorization and blocking to ensure smooth transitions in a single-location, multi-character scene.
Director Watch Ep. 142 'The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp' (Powell and Pressburger, 1943) with Special Guest Bilge Ebiri
Q: What is your favorite Wells if it isn't Citizen Kane, Bilge, and why does it stand out for you?
Bilge explains that while Citizen Kane holds a top place, F for Fake and The Trial are close contenders because they reveal Wells's restless formal curiosity and political cunning, showing how narrative and form can be used to critique power and identity.
Director Watch Podcast Ep. 132 - 'Heaven Can Wait' (Warren Beatty, 1978)
Q: How does this movie connect to the broader theme of relationships in Beatty's work?
The film explores Beatty's infamous romantic persona and how that aspect influences his character's journey, underlying the comedic situations throughout the movie.
