Great podcast but the sound could be better too much echo and I cannot hear a lot of the interview. Had to turn a few off.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Rachel Milne
Q: What does intimism mean in your practice?
Intimism is about painting intimate spaces to reveal the lives and histories of the people who inhabit them, focusing on atmosphere and a tactile sense of place rather than grand narratives.
Lily Mae Martin
Q: Tell me about the drop by drawing initiative at the National Gallery of Victoria and why you argue against the eraser as a safety net.
The eraser is not a safety net, it becomes a hindrance. If you're worrying about the eraser, you're not fully engaging with observation and drawing from life. Erasers are useful but should not be relied upon as a safety net, and I model and demonstrate how to use them effectively without depending on them.
Lily Mae Martin
Q: I read somewhere that you'd spent years believing you had to paint to be taken seriously. But you majored in drawing. I mean, what was the atmosphere like at the VCA around drawing as a discipline?
I applied for both drawing and painting, and I was asked in my interview by Bernard Sacks, which one I would choose, and I chose drawing because it's my love and the way I've always explored the world. I think the idea of painting and the painting hierarchy comes from the broader art world, not just the VCA, and concept and intellectual approaches were emphasized more than I expected.
Lisa Bale
Q: What led to the shift to using your birth name, Lisa Bale?
A complex history with my family and the discovery that my legal name differed from what I had used professionally; reconnecting with my father and the sense of identity it brought prompted the change.
Lisa Bale
Q: How did self-teaching and operating outside the traditional art establishment affect your work?
It gave me freedom to develop a meticulous, hyper-real style without institutional constraints, though it also meant I had to prove myself and overcome imposter feelings.
