Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

When the Viewer Becomes Part of the Work- with Harriet Schwarzrock
Q: How do you approach viewer interaction during the making of your works, and does it shift over time?
Interaction isn't just a post-hoc effect; while I'm making, the phenomenon inside the vessel guides what happens, and I've moved from blown glass to borosilicate tubing to explore more capacitive, symbiotic relationships between vessels that can glow together.
When the Viewer Becomes Part of the Work- with Harriet Schwarzrock
Q: So for any listeners meeting you for the first time, who are you and how do you describe what you do?
I'm Harriet, a glassblower who works with plasma illumination inside glass vessels, developing a practice that treats plasma as a responsive medium influenced by proximity, touch, and presence, and I draw on physics and philosophy to frame it as a relational art form.
Building a Body of Work With Wendy Marinich
Q: How do you handle building a body of work when ideas evolve or shift during the process?
I follow a clear path but allow intuitive moments to push me forward, testing and expanding the concept while keeping the throughline intact, which helps the work stay cohesive yet dynamic.
Building a Body of Work With Wendy Marinich
Q: What sparked your decision to work with glass and develop a monochrome series?
The idea came from a natural progression after observing reflections and transparency; I decided to explore block colors and glass, planning a cohesive world where color and form could carry the concept across multiple pieces.
Building a Body of Work With Wendy Marinich
Q: When did you start calling yourself an artist?
I started calling myself an artist after I made a clean break from my previous work life, letting go of the idea of doing something else and embracing a personal, self-led path that led to exhibitions.
