Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Building a Body of Work With Wendy Marinich
Q: How do you handle building a body of work when ideas evolve or shift during the process?
I follow a clear path but allow intuitive moments to push me forward, testing and expanding the concept while keeping the throughline intact, which helps the work stay cohesive yet dynamic.
Building a Body of Work With Wendy Marinich
Q: What sparked your decision to work with glass and develop a monochrome series?
The idea came from a natural progression after observing reflections and transparency; I decided to explore block colors and glass, planning a cohesive world where color and form could carry the concept across multiple pieces.
Building a Body of Work With Wendy Marinich
Q: When did you start calling yourself an artist?
I started calling myself an artist after I made a clean break from my previous work life, letting go of the idea of doing something else and embracing a personal, self-led path that led to exhibitions.
Critique and the Inner Critic with Alyssa Monks
Q: When is the right time to seek critique, and how should a student approach it?
The right time is once you've reached a point where you feel you've solved as much of the puzzle as possible and are open to new insights. Students should seek critiques from artists whose work they admire and understand, while being mindful of filtering feedback from non-artists whose perspectives may be less actionable for their trajectory.
Critique and the Inner Critic with Alyssa Monks
Q: Is there a particular piece of feedback that has stuck with you over the years?
Yes. She recalls being told to turn a painting around and readdress the same subject from the opposite side, which sparked a major shift in her technique and understanding of light, shadow, and composition, illustrating how powerful targeted critique can be when it challenges the artist to see anew.
