The way he blamed his mother for certain events in his childhood while giving his dad a pass for seeing him only on weekends and *refusing to let him live with him*. His mother is criticized for not greeting him when he walks in the door but his father couldn’t be bothered to raise him because his second wife said no? Thanks I’ve heard enough. This kind of casual misogyny ruined it for me.
This helped me understand conversion therapy on such a deeper level.
This story is SO important for those of us who grew up believing and being told we can change. John is brave for doing this and showing us that that is a LIE and we are all loved just the way we are.
Hmmm this was pretty hard to listen to but at the same time I couldn’t stop. I can’t imagine how many people’s lives were ruined or even lost because of this man. It feels criminal—that he shouldn’t be able to walk around free without the consequences of these crimes against humanity. Well produced, but again, I experienced so much cognitive dissonance while hearing this story.
I keep waiting for John to take responsibility and acknowledge the harm he and his organization did. He mostly focuses on how hard it was personally. He does talk about not wanting more people to be harmed but I have yet to hear anything about trying to reckon with the damage.
