Pat Steir usually works on her paintings over a number of months, as she uses wet paint that stays wet for a long time, often working on several at a time.

Q: When you asked people to sit for you, or I know in some cases you said you worked from photographs to create paintings, were you aware that they were sick or that they might be dying?
Chinn acknowledges that she was aware some subjects were ill, but many were not sick at the time of her portraits.
