  • Episode 435 - Excellent

Loved getting the update on where election issues stand in CA. Without a decent newspaper, it is hard to know where things are moving.

The discussion of Gavin Newsom and his future prospects was excellent, also.

  • Disservice to our country.

I have listened to your podcast and conclude that you are doing a disservice to our country. Your podcasts focus primarily on collecting and counting ballots. However you seem to continually avoid the discussion of issues that may have significant effects on elections.

First is election irregularities. Can you comment on the number of votes in key swing states that were cast that did not fit the state legislatures’ rules for voting? Specifically curious about the dramatic trend to early mail i... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

A Matter of Trust: Macke Raymond on “Unheard Voices” in America’s School Communities
Q: What inspired you to pursue Unheard Voices and community conversations in education?
I wanted to understand why, in many places, the people most affected by schools—parents, teachers, business leaders, and other stakeholders—aren't invited into decision-making and how information about school performance is communicated or hidden. The goal was to surface the dimensions of unheardness and identify practical ways communities can engage with and influence their schools for better outcomes.
David Shribman on Journalism’s Struggles, Restoring Institutional Trust, and Life After Trump
Q: What does journalism need to do to restore public trust?
Editors and reporters must become evangelists for their craft, engage the community directly, and demonstrate transparency and accountability in how they report and why they publish certain stories.
Oil Shocks, Energy Strategies, And George Shultz’s Wisdom
Q: Is there a cohesive American energy strategy or do we vacillate with administrations?
There is no single cohesive strategy; energy policy tends to be emergent with some past cohesion only in acts like the Energy Policy Act of 2005, while current direction is shaped by administrative priorities and ongoing debates over permitting reform and infrastructure.
All Roads Leads To . . .? Barry Strauss on Ancient Rome, Modern Warfare
Q: Did Caesar really say Et tu Brute?
Et tu Brute? is a Renaissance invention; ancient sources say Caesar merely groaned, with a rumor that he spoke a Greek phrase pointing to Brutus as a son, which remains a witty but historically dubious line.
All Roads Leads To . . .? Barry Strauss on Ancient Rome, Modern Warfare
Q: What did Antony really do after Caesar's assassination?
Antony delivered a crowd-rousing speech that was a blend of pep rally and rhetorical manipulation, aided by a wax Caesar model to dramatize the wounds, which inflamed public sentiment despite Shakespeare's fictional embellishments.
