  • Terrific resource in troubled times

We're living in massively unsettled times with oversimplified solutions on offer everywhere you listen. Matthew Remski's coverage here is more in-depth and careful than what you'll find on most podcasts. He manages to sound clarion moral calls without sounding preachy or dour. People might be surprised to find an anti-fascist voice so deeply saturated by kindness, but Remski seems to be fighting fascism precisely because he hopes for a kinder world. Just like so many anti-fascists ultimately do.... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

39: Supporting the Filton 25 w/ Lisa Matthews
Q: Can you walk us through what happened to Finn when he was arrested, what he was charged with, and where things currently stand?
Finn was arrested with five others; they faced charges including criminal damage and violent disorder under joint enterprise, with the case moving across multiple trials. The first trial ended in a hung jury, and subsequent trials have faced complex legal maneuvers, including the use of terror powers and limitations on evidence. The situation remains unsettled with upcoming proceedings and ongoing support from families.
30. Another Conspiracy Theory about Marxists w/ Richard Gilman-Opalsky
Q: Why does Rockhill argue that Western Marxism is compromised by state influences?
Rockhill contends that key theorists were funded or positioned by state or elite institutions, which he claims redirected revolutionary energy into cultural critique, thereby stabilizing capitalism and fragmenting the left.
30. Another Conspiracy Theory about Marxists w/ Richard Gilman-Opalsky
Q: What is the Frankfurt School's historical contribution to critical theory?
They provided a multifaceted critique combining Marxist analysis with psychoanalysis and culture studies to understand how mass media and technology shape social change, while tracing the fraught path from revolution to liberal capitalism and the risks of fascism.
35. Antifascist Tooth Fairy w/ E.V. Debs
Q: Why use a game format to teach about state power and antifascism rather than a narrative or documentary approach?
The guest argues that a game allows people to exercise agency, make decisions, and test ideas without real-world risk, serving as a practical training ground for understanding power dynamics and how to respond in real life.
35. Antifascist Tooth Fairy w/ E.V. Debs
Q: In talking about your game, what on the ground in real life experiences have been most impactful for you in informing the ideas and values behind it?
Debs explains that personal experiences with rising violence during protests and attacks in Seattle inspired a game focused on community defense, mutual aid, and strategic, nonviolent resistance when possible, while acknowledging the realities of legal risk and the need for de-escalation.
