  • As a practicing anesthesiologist, I’m often frustrated that my flagship science journal lists heavily toward “bench science”, and this discourages me from reading rhetorical journal. It’s great to have this effort to point me toward the research that actually can influence my practice.

  • Ridiculous

Most recent episode gives high praise to a French study forced to terminate due to high rates of bradycardia and asystole after running Precedex at up to 1.4 mcg/kg/hr. They then discuss why opioid free anesthesia is fraught with adverse events. Please. Whatever did you think would happen after running Precedex at those rates I should make a study with patients on a fentanyl infusion so I can show the pitfalls of balanced anesthesia.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Featured Author Podcast: Pain During Cesarean Delivery
Q: Where do you think the biggest knowledge gaps remain, and what are your next research steps?
Key gaps include identifying robust risk factors for intraoperative pain, deeper characterization of patient experience versus clinician assessment, and understanding long-term outcomes like postpartum mood disorders and PTSD; ongoing studies in the UK and Australia will explore these questions further.
Featured Author Podcast: Pain During Cesarean Delivery
Q: What do you see as the main clinical implications for practice based on your findings?
Pain during Caesarean delivery under neuraxial anesthesia is common and should be anticipated; practice should focus on ensuring effective blocks, checking catheter function, avoiding epidural top-ups when possible, and engaging in proactive pain management to prevent conversions to general anesthesia.
Featured Author Podcast: Pain During Cesarean Delivery
Q: You conducted this study over eight weeks across 15 centers in the US and Canada. What was the core hypothesis you set out to test?
The study aimed to determine the true incidence of intraoperative pain during Caesarean delivery with neuraxial anesthesia, and to examine associations with institutional, demographic, obstetric, and anesthetic factors, as well as overall patient satisfaction with pain management.
Featured Author Podcast: Opioid Disorder Medications in Surgery Patients
Q: Can you just briefly describe what that is for people who are listening that might not understand what that is?
The X-Waiver was a regulatory requirement previously needed to prescribe buprenorphine for opioid use disorder, which has now been eliminated to enhance access.
Featured Author Podcast: Opioid Disorder Medications in Surgery Patients
Q: What specifically motivated this study? What were you hoping to learn and how did you go about answering those questions?
The study was motivated by clinicians' observations of an increased number of patients on buprenorphine and aimed to quantify how common this is among surgical patients.
