  • As a practicing anesthesiologist, I’m often frustrated that my flagship science journal lists heavily toward “bench science”, and this discourages me from reading rhetorical journal. It’s great to have this effort to point me toward the research that actually can influence my practice.

  • Ridiculous

Most recent episode gives high praise to a French study forced to terminate due to high rates of bradycardia and asystole after running Precedex at up to 1.4 mcg/kg/hr. They then discuss why opioid free anesthesia is fraught with adverse events. Please. Whatever did you think would happen after running Precedex at those rates I should make a study with patients on a fentanyl infusion so I can show the pitfalls of balanced anesthesia.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Featured Author Podcast: Peripartum Cardiac Arrest During Anesthetic Care
Q: What are the practical implications for clinicians in obstetric anesthesia from these findings?
The findings underscore the importance of early recognition, hemorrhage control, timely resuscitative delivery when indicated, and strong team leadership; simulation training and crisis checklists can significantly improve response effectiveness in these rare but critical events.
Featured Author Podcast: Peripartum Cardiac Arrest During Anesthetic Care
Q: What were the most common etiologies identified for the arrests, and how did they differ in timing?
Hemorrhage accounted for roughly 40 percent of arrests and amniotic fluid embolism about 31 percent; hemorrhage arrests tended to occur later after delivery (median ~100 minutes) while amniotic fluid embolisms caused arrests within minutes of delivery, indicating distinct phenotypes.
Featured Author Podcast: Peripartum Cardiac Arrest During Anesthetic Care
Q: What data source did you use and why is it important for this research?
We used MPOG, a consortium of over 80 hospitals, which provides granular anesthetic records and clinical data that allow us to link events to specific management decisions and outcomes, enabling a more nuanced analysis than large administrative datasets.
Featured Author Podcast: Peripartum Cardiac Arrest During Anesthetic Care
Q: Dr. Furdina, what question or questions were you trying to answer with this study?
We aimed to reassess how often maternal cardiac arrest occurs in the peripartum period in settings where anesthesiologists are involved, and to examine detailed clinical aspects that larger administrative datasets miss, such as actual anesthetic management and in-the-moment outcomes.
Featured Author Podcast: Diverse Perspectives on Outcomes after Anesthesia
Q: How do you hope these standardized outcomes will influence future trials and care?
By standardizing outcomes, future trials can be compared more easily across regions, enhancing knowledge and enabling more patient-centric improvements in pediatric perioperative care.
